When this column reviewed the 5 best flash suppressors for the AR15 rifle, three of them were made by Smith Enterprise, Inc. The prevailing thought on one model was, “When are they going to do this for the M-14/M1A platform for the Wind Talker sound suppressor?” The wait is over, Smith Enterprise announced today that the G6A2 Vortex flash hider is getting a makeover and hitting the shooting range as the G6A3.
Smith Enterprise announced on June 26, 2013, that this newly designed Vortex flash hider will have the same external cuts on the helical flutes of the Vortex flash hider which are designed to mitigate carbon buildup when a Wind Talker sound suppressor is installed on the rifle. As rounds are fired, the carbon will collect in these scalloped edges, allowing the user to easily remove a Wind Talker sound suppressor, even after thousands of rounds have been fired.
Applying this design to the M14 Vortex flash hider was a cinch for Smith Enterprise, who is the leading provider of M14 upgrades in the United States. This author has been using a traditional Vortex Model G6A2 on his M14 since 2005 because it is one of the best flash hiders on the market, reducing visible flash by 99%. Smith Enterprise makes mounts, bipods, scope rings, flash hiders, muzzle brakes, Wind Talker sound suppressors, slings, front sights, rear sights, trigger assemblies, cheek pads, bolt stops, and several other premium parts for the M14.
When Ron Smith, president of SEI, was asked about this new product, he stated: “This is just the beginning. We have many more innovations to come. We have new technologies for flash hiders, sound suppressors, and other accessories. This M14 improvement is important right now because so many people are interested in our Crazy Horse rifles and we want to take care of our customers.”
The Crazy Horse rifle is built by Smith Enterprise as a super accurate M14 and is being used as a Designated Marksman rifle by several elite units throughout the US Military and the US Border Patrol. The Crazy Horse rifle upgrade features a multitude of changes that make a great rifle into an exceptionally accurate one that will last a lifetime. The new Crazy Horse rifle builds will include the G6A3 M14 Vortex flash hider model. Customers can still select the old G6A2 for their Crazy Horse rifle if they prefer.
Smith Enterprise says that they will extend this new G6A3 external thread flash hider technology to all its Vortex flash hider models eventually, but not until they are ready for release. In reading reviews of the Wind Talker sound suppressor, this should prove to be an excellent move for Smith as it could give this author, for instance, to share a single can between 12 different rifles including an M40A3, FALs, H&K 91s, M14, M1As, M4s, AR15s and even an AK-47. The 7.62 suppressor’s inside diameter is compatible with the outside diameter of all these Vortex flash hider models and suppresses 5.56 or 7.62 X 39 as effective as it does 7.62X51. The new external scalloping will make it easier to remove the Wind Talker sound suppressor to try all these different rifles.
