I’m still exploring around Aspen Colorado. Today we drove to another posh downhill ski area called Snowmass. There is another alpine village/ swanky hotel complex here and about a jillion ski lifts and downhill runs. We took the Elk Camp Gondola up about two miles to where it ends. A chair lift continues up another mile to the top of the highest ski run , 11,325’. In the summer mountain bikers ride up on the gondola and chair lift and then mountain bike down the ski slopes. Some of the gondola cars and the chair lifts have bike racks. This appears to be a popular place for them. I suspect the place is quite a bit busier in the winter with skiers though. a few more of the 14,000′ mountains are visible from Snowmass.
We took a two mile loop hike (Sierra Club Loop) which meanders through the forest uphill for the first half, then back down the second half which crosses and follows a ski run part of the way. The wildflowers were out and the scenes below are spectacular. The best part is that the gondola ride tickets we bought the other day to go up Aspen Mountain were good for this ride too.
