In his Salon article “The Walking Dead”: Anti-libertarian critique” Steven Lloyd Wilson attempts to make the case that without our “greatest invention,” the state, we’ll all be just a pack of nameless, aimless shameless zombies forever wandering the face of the earth.
The whole thrust of his argument is that if libertarians succeed in “stripping away the vestiges of the state,” that triumph of civilization that gave us writing, electricity, science and art, there’ll be nothing left but “the hell that waits at the logical end of the libertarian impulse.”
Simplification: The logical end of libertarians stripping away the state will leave us in a zombie hell.
Consider for a moment these loose definitional observations, admittedly cherry-picked, about zombies and sociopaths from dictionary.com:
Zombie: “a person whose behavior or responses are wooden, listless, or seemingly rote; automaton.”
Sociopath: “a person with a psychopathic personality whose behavior is antisocial, often criminal, and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.”
Sociopaths, like zombies, cannot feel positive emotions and have no sense of empathy or remorse, so they frequently seek out power structures where they can dominate their prey. Zombies, in this case figurative, do this by wandering over the land and sucking the literal lifeblood from normal people. Sociopaths, who are real, do this by moving into positions of political, social, economic, military or other structures of power where they can wander over the land to suck the figurative lifeblood from normal people.
Emotionless sociopaths, everywhere and throughout history, take control of governments and operate them to satisfy their own lust for power, wealth and ego gratification.
Mindless zombies, everywhere and throughout history, are their obedient followers.
Yet Wilson equates zombies with libertarians who explicitly reject coercion against others while blindly attributing the actual zombie/sociopathic malevolence of those who capture and use government coercion against others as the very progenitors of “civilization.”
It’s simply inconceivable to any actual living thinking human being with at least some awareness of the consistently rapacious, mass murdering history of governments and the incredible triumphs of free creative individuals how Wilson could get everything so embarrassingly backwards.
It’s enough to make a rational person suspect that Wilson himself is a lurching corpse resurrected from some putrefied gravesite and voodoozed into reeling about the literary landscape gurgling grotesque alarms about “The Night of the Libertarian Dead.”
It’s mindless government-worshippers like Wilson who are the zombies.
