Most of southern New England experienced high temperatures Friday into the mid and some upper 90s with Boston recording a record setting 99 degrees. This broke the old record for the date of 98 degrees set in 1982. Other notable high temperatures throughout southern New England was 98 degrees in Norwood, 97 in Fitchburg and Springfield, 96 Hartford and 93 for Worcester and Providence.
The steamy air mass will be with us for one more day as it stays humid through Saturday. We have been stating this all week and once again the National Weather Service has issued yet another Heat Advisory for Saturday, as heat indices could reach 100 or slightly higher through the afternoon hours.
A strong cold front will be approaching the area during Saturday and spells relief from this scorching heat wave that has been with us since last Sunday. Once the front slides across the Pioneer Valley drier and cooler air begins to spill into the region bringing a refreshing change.
However, before we get to the nicer weather we may have to go through a period of heavy weather during Saturday afternoon and evening. Showers and thunderstorms are likely going to overspread the area in advance of the cold front and there are signs that some storms could turn strong to severe with heavy downpours and gusty winds that could be damaging. If you have plans to be outdoors on Saturday keep a watchful eye to the sky and be prepared to take cover if a thunderstorm comes rolling through your neighborhood.
What a relief it will be on Sunday as it will feel like a weight has been lifted from your shoulders. Although temperatures will reach into the low and mid 80s it will feel much more comfortable as the humidity levels fall off dramatically.
It will be a pristine day on Monday as high pressure settles in overhead. Clouds increase at night with showers and thunderstorms to follow on Tuesday.
