Welcome to June 1st. Meet the new month, same as how the old month ended. Hazy, hot and humid. But, changes are on the way late this weekend and early next week that will bring us significantly cooler and drier weather conditions.
Here are the details: The high pressure ridge slowly moves further offshore over the weekend. This will continue to draw the heat and humidity into southern New England through the weekend. The warmer of the two weekend days is likely to be Saturday and probably the sunnier as well.
A cold front will approach from the west Sunday. It will slowly move closer to the greater Springfield area Sunday night and begin to trigger showers and thunderstorms that are expected to last into Monday. The shower activity may begin later Sunday afternoon, with a chance of a few storms becoming strong to severe. Since the cold front will move across the area on Monday at a slow pace it will keep the showers and storms around for a good portion of the day.
Once the cold front moves to our east a much drier and cooler air mass follows for most of the remainder of the work week, courtesy of high pressure. We can look forward to pleasant weather and more seasonal temperatures. Some afternoon clouds may build in Tuesday afternoon, otherwise fair skies rule for Tuesday and Wednesday.
Here is a snapshot look at the high temperatures at a few locations on Friday: Springfield – 94 (New Record High), Orange – 93, Westfield – 96, Pittsfield – 88, Hartford – 95 and Boston – 94. Hot stuff for sure! Keep in mind that for an official heat wave you must reach or exceed 90 degrees for three consecutive days.
