Yesterday we talked about how summer like weather would be back in the fold Saturday and it certainly was. What a fantastic day with a good amount of sunshine and temperatures warming into the 80s. However, we also spoke of Sunday becoming a wet day and that part of the forecast is still on track as the final weekend of July comes to a close.
Two features will have an impact on southern New England over the next 36 hours or so. Feature #1 is a weak low pressure system that is moving through the waters south of New England and will pass near Cape Cod late tonight. Most of the rain shield from this system will impact eastern most areas of Massachusetts, southeast Massachusetts and Cape Cod. Meanwhile, here in the greater Springfield area we may stay mostly dry for the first half of the day Sunday before feature #2, an approaching cold front to our west, begins to impact our weather. A moist air mass will be riding northward ahead of the approaching front and a few spot showers and thunderstorms may cross the terrain during the day. The shower activity should become more numerous late in the day and evening and again near dawn Monday. It will become noticeably more humid through the day and overnight.
The cold front moves through the Pioneer Valley early Monday, perhaps triggering a few showers or a storm early, before skies improve through the afternoon. It becomes less humid by the overnight as a dry and pleasant air mass overspreads the area. High pressure takes control for Tuesday and Wednesday and with mild and dry air in place we should enjoy two very nice days.
Four Day Outlook:
Tonight: Clouds increase as temperatures fall to the low and mid 60s. Light south winds.
Sunday: Mostly cloudy, pockets of showers with a thunderstorm possible, becoming more numerous late. Becoming humid. Highs in the upper 70s to low 80s. Light south to southwest winds,
Sunday night: Periods of showers, chance of a thunderstorm. Areas of developing fog. Muggy, lows in the mid to upper 60s.
Monday: Chance of an early shower or storm, followed by partial clearing in the afternoon. Turning less humid. Highs in the low 80s.
Monday night, Tuesday and Wednesday: Fair skies, less humid and pleasant. Mostly sunny days. Overnight lows in the upper 50s to low 60s. Daytime highs generally in the low 80s.
That will close out the month of July as we turn the page to August on Thursday.
