Final Fantasy 13 was released to mixed reviews. The game’s critics complained of the game’s linearity, “20 hour tutorial”, lack of towns, lack of variety in side-quests, and a general lack of activities besides walking down straight corridors while fighting monsters. Despite this criticism, FF13 was one of the only games in the Final Fantasy series that received a direct sequel: Final Fantasy 13-2.
FF13-2 was far less linear, allowing the player to pick a wide variety of locations and time periods to travel to. The game also featured several towns, something which its predecessor was sorely lacking. There was much greater variety in the side-quests, and an entire area devoted purely to mini-games. It was as though Square-Enix designed the entire game with the intention of pleasing the critics of FF13. Unfortunately, FF13-2 received even less favorable reviews than its predecessor.
However, FF13-2’s poor reception has not stopped Square-Enix from developing Final Fantasy 13-3, also known as Lightning Returns, the final game in the FF13 trilogy. The design of FF13-3 is a huge departure from the rest of the series; the game has an open world with vast wilderness, and the main character can jump and climb like in an action-adventure game. It would appear that Square-Enix is trying to abandon traditional Japanese game mechanics and adopt as many western game mechanics as possible.
However, Square-Enix didn’t stop there; not content to merely improve game mechanics, they have evidently taken measures to enhance the sex appeal of their protagonist as well.
Famitsu, the most prominent Japanese gaming publication, recently interviewed the Lightning Returns development team. Somehow, the conversation turned to the matter of the main character’s bust size.
Question: Is it true Lightning went from a C cup to a D cup?
Goto: Well, Toriyama told us to make her bigger!
Toriyama: You’re just passing the blame!
Goto: Well, yes, we made her bigger.
Question: That is to say, she was a C until now? She jiggles about a bit now, doesn’t she?
Toriyama: It actually depends on the wear you select. Sort of like supportive underwear.
The fact that the journalists from Famitsu wanted to ask the development team questions about the main character’s jiggling breasts, the fact that the development team did not bat an eye at these questions, and also the fact that the development team spent time improving this aspect of the game, speaks volumes about the priorities of Japanese males in the game industry.
The developers of FF13-3 have also released many screenshots of the various costumes that the player will be able to dress Lightning in, including a very skimpy outfit that includes cat ears. With all of this in mind, it is quite obvious that the development team is making a concentrated effort to give Lightning much more sex appeal than she’s had in previous games.
Final Fantasy fans can look forward to admiring Lightning’s enhanced bust when the game is released in Feburary of 2014 (or November of this year in Japan).
