Stage Aurora Theatrical Company was not the only venue to have a dramatic reading. They joined other venues along with Project 1 Voice (1 Voice, 1 Play, 1 Day) and over 30 other African-American theatres all across the U.S.A., as they simultaneously presented staged readings of the same play on the same day. That’s right, 29 other professional theatre organizations presented “A Soldier’s Play” on Monday, June 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m.
Eleven men all dressed in black, read the lines of the entire “A Soldiers Play” to those who appreciate the arts and theatrical prose of the right kind. The actors on stage read their lines with enthusiasm, heart and a professional devotion to the craft. This was a play with a lot of ‘colorful metaphors’, but given the time and setting of “A Soldiers Play”, the language was necessary.
The script was exactly as the movie or the play. While sitting and listening to the dialogue, those who had seen the film could visualize each part. Those who never saw the story could appreciate how it was a long time ago. It was a time when families use to gather around a radio and used their imaginations to visualize the occurrences that happened on an army base around 1943. The audience could hear how ‘Negros’ had to get-along during a murder investigation on an army base. It was also unusual for a black man to earn a degree in law and be able to defend his people.
If you missed the reading, that was very well done, then you should make a point to RUN to Stage Aurora when they have their next production. Thanks to Darryl Reuben Hall for introducing Jacksonville, Florida to the Arts.
