Student refuses same-sex deal: A report posted at the Huffington Post on May 24, 2013 says Kaitlyn Hunt, 18, refuses to accept the same-sex plea deal she was offered. Hunt’s story has sparked a huge outcry and debate since she was arrested and charged with two felonies over her same-sex relationship with her 15-year-old girlfriend.
According to the Huffington Post, the state attorney’s deal would have Hunt “labeled a sex offender and placed on two years’ house arrest.” Hunt’s attorney, Julia Graves, wrote the following statement:
“This is a situation of two teenagers who happen to be of the same sex involved in a relationship. If this case involved a boy and girl, there would be no media attention to this case. … If this incident occurred 108 days earlier when she was 17, we wouldn’t even be here.”
What are your thoughts on Kaitlyn Hunt refusing the plea deal? Do you believe the story wouldn’t have gained attention if the couple were not of the same sex? Would Kaitlyn have been arrested at all?
