Many people have suspected it for years, but a study finally proved it. Republican politicians are bigger liars than Democrats. And they are not embarrassed about it. One of the biggest targets of GOP lies is Obamacare, but everything is fair game.
The Center for Media and Public Affairs (CMPA) at George Mason University conducted a study that found Republicans are three times less trustworthy than Democrats. The study finds that PolitiFact.com, a major fact checking organization has rated Republican claims as false three times as often as Democratic claims during President Obama’s second term.
Republicans continue to get worse marks in recent weeks, despite controversies over Obama administration statements on Benghazi, the IRS and the AP.
“While Republicans see a credibility gap in the Obama administration, PolitiFact rates Republicans as the less credible party” said CMPA President Dr Robert Lichter.
PolitiFact rated 32% of Republican claims as “false” or “pants on fire,” compared to 11% of Democratic claims – a 3 to 1 margin. Conversely, Politifact rated 22% of Democratic claims as “entirely true” compared to 11% of Republican claims – a 2 to 1 margin, the study found.
A majority of Democratic statements (54%) were rated as mostly or entirely true, compared to only 18% of Republican statements. Conversely, a majority of Republican statements (52%) were rated as mostly or entirely false, compared to only 24% of Democratic statements.
Republicans lie more about current scandals
Despite controversies over Obama administration statements regarding Benghazi, the IRS and the Associated Press, Republicans have continued to fare worse than Democrats, with 60% of their claims rated as false so far this month (May 1 – May 22), compared to 29% of Democratic statements – a 2 to 1 margin.
Besides Republican lies on the latest scandals, Obamacare is still one of the biggest targets of Republican untruths. Just this month Tea Party Republican Senator and presidential candidate Rand Paul ridiculed the new health law for forcing doctors to use 122,000 new medical diagnostic codes for describing Americans’ injuries to the government, including for “injuries sustained from a turtle” and “walking into a lamppost.”
One problem with Paul’s statement is that those diagnostic codes were enacted by the Bush administration. There is nothing like revising history to fit a political narrative. The other problem is that Rand Paul is a Doctor and knows better.
In February During a Budget Committee Hearing on Tuesday, Alabama Republican Senator Jeff Sessions announced that the Affordable Care Act would actually increase long-term debt by $6.2 trillion, undermining administration claims that the law would expand coverage to millions of Americans and help reign in federal spending.
As with nearly everything a Republican says about the Affordable Care Act, Sessions was telling a fib.
He asked the Government Accounting Office (GAO) to look into the matter. The GAO found that in fact Obamacare will reduce the deficit as a percent of GDP. For example, by 2035 Obamacare reduces the deficit for 8.8% of GDP to 8.0%; by 2060 it drop it from 10.8% to 0.0% of GDP. And by 2080 it drops the deficit a full 3.3% of GDP.
Republicans warn of huge rate increases in 2014 when the law takes affect. So far the new rates insurance companies have filed in California, the nation’s largest state, have come in significantly less than the Congressional Budget Office predicted when it scored the proposed law in 2010. Rates in California came in at $3,600 a year compared to the $5,300 projected.
The prize for Obamacare lies, however, is shared by Republican Senator Chuck Grassley who said it would “kill Grandma,” and soon-to-be former Congresswoman Bachmann who said the law would “literally kill women and children.”
Republicans never retract lies when they get called out on them. Their MO is to keep repeating the lies until people believe it. That is working on Obamacare because they have convinced 35% of the population to oppose it. The rest like it (43%), and 16% feels it does not go far enough.
So do not expect any more veracity now that they have been called out.
