This week’s SuicideGirl gamer of the week is Romany Suicide. Romany literally grew up with video games so nobody can ever say she’s not a “true gamer.” I spoke with her about some of her all-time favorites and even got some useful Versus Mode tips for all you Left 4 Dead noobs out there.
Why did you choose your SuicideGirls nickname?
I was going to go with another name but the photographer (Writeboy) I worked with for my set felt I looked mischievous and gypsy-like in my photos and suggested “Romany” since Gypsy was taken and it is like an alternate word for that…
Tell me about some of your tattoos.
My first tattoo on my right upper arm was Leeloo from the Fifth Element, though my skin doesn’t seem to like ink too well and it didn’t quite heal the way it should have so I just recently got it covered up with what with eventually be a space sleeve. Right now it’s flaming asteroids swirling through space. On my left forearm is a new school version of Frank the Bunny from Donnie Darko. I had some scars to cover up and Frank had personal meaning to me, now you can’t even see the scars!
What are some of your favorite video games?
As far as favorite games goes, my all-time favorite has for many years been Persona 1 for the PlayStation when it was originally released as Revelations: Persona. Everything Atlus puts out is gold! A somewhat newer favorite of mine is Left 4 Dead, I’ve spent 12 hours at a time playing Versus Mode online with my badass L4D crew I had, we were nearly unstoppable! I played the crap out of some Suikoden games back in the day, those were awesome. My favorite arcade game is Revolution X, second would be Hydro Thunder, and third is Bust-a-Move. I spent many hours at the racetrack playing those as a child.
How did you first get into gaming?
I feel like I was kind of an odd kid. I didn’t have many friends and the other kids all thought I was weird so I mostly just spent my time alone playing video games or reading. My older sister had a Nintendo and a Super Nintendo that she didn’t play so I played those often, renting games every Friday from the local video rental place. The Christmas that I got my PlayStation is one of my fondest childhood memories. I played the first three Tomb Raider games religiously, spent hundreds of hours customizing my Armored Cores, and Parasite Eve gave me goosebumps, as did Resident Evil (though for a different reason). Video games are like an homage to my neglected childhood, an awkward childhood spent in introversion and with lack of parental concern. Games were my friends when I had none and I miss the days when I’d wake up early just because I was so excited to play.
So when you say Left 4 Dead, do you mean the original?
The first Left 4 Dead on the 360, yeah. I didn’t like the levels on the second one as much or the new infected or the characters…
Are there still people actually playing the original L4D online these days?
There’s not that many people playing the older L4D as there used to be, and mostly just crappy people. Can’t put together a good match like I used to.
Give me some tips for versus mode.
Don’t cheat! Cheating is for losers! Definitely try and get a good crew together. As humans you’ll definitely need to stick together, don’t split up or stray far from each other, keep your eyes on all directions and cover each other’s backs including making sure whoever is running behind you all is covered. As infected, all are great to play with and have their own pros and cons. You should use the Smoker like a sniper, it’s great to pick off stragglers with. I once got really lucky on No Mercy and smoked a person out of an elevator just as the doors were closing, I’ve never been able to recreate that however, it was hilarious though!
My favorite infected is the Boomer, funny and often overlooked, you can whittle so much health down with a well-placed puke and the horde comes a running. With the tank just make sure you catch your bearings before running around and don’t under any circumstance let them catch you on fire. Cars and other movable objects can incapacitate a whole team if smacked properly. Hunters are more like a wolf pack, try to jump on the humans in tandem so none of them can fight you off. Definitely practice jumping, too. You can do more damage from higher jumps.
Are there any games that you wanted to play but haven’t ever gotten the chance to?
There are probably thousands of games that I’ve wanted to play but haven’t gotten the chance… :(
Dragon Age, Ninja Gaiden, Saga Frontier, Batman: Arkham City, the Star Trek MMO, and the new X-Com. I was a big fan of X-com: UFO Defense so wasn’t sure how the new one would measure up. There’s a lot more, I am just forgetful…
Have you played The Walking Dead game yet?
I played the first Walking Dead game that came out, the one you had to buy in episodes and I thought that was completely unique and very emotionally involving. I may have shed a tears at times and there was definitely some cringing at certain moments, the way they made it really drew me in. I have not played the new one about Daryl yet. That’s another on my list of games I want to play!
I see you are a Star Trek fan. Do you have a favorite episode?
I have been watching all of the The Next Generation on Netflix. I used to watch the reruns as a kid all the time but I can’t really say I have a favorite episode yet…
So you are also a Workaholics fan. Ders, Blake, or Adam?
Love them all but I am definitely a Blake fan! Can anyone deny that adorably tiny dick? I know I sure as hell wouldn’t if I had the chance. ;)
What are some of your other hobbies outside of video games and modeling? Ever been to any conventions?
I watch a lot of movies and try to catch up on 90’s shows on Netflix. I like collecting comics when I can, reading, modeling, going to the gym, going on adventures, and getting out of the house. Eating is something I REALLY enjoy (more than I should) so exotic cuisine or food I haven’t tried before excites me. I also do love sleeping. Hope you can count that as a hobby. ;)
Where can fans find more of you?
