Even though the new Superman movie, “Man of Steel,” looks dark in comparison with previous films about the comic book hero, LEGO has produced a collection of tie-in sets that will prompt younger fans to see the PG-13 picture. The movie, directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill, is due in U.S. theaters on June 14, but the LEGO toys are already on store shelves, and they offer a sense of some of the scenes viewers can expect to see in the film.
The new sets are part of the DC Universe Super Heroes collection, which also includes Batman sets. LEGO currently has two lines of licensed super hero sets, the other being a Marvel collection that includes Spiderman, the Avengers, and the X-Men.
For the new Superman line, the smallest set is “Metropolis Showdown,” which retails for $12.99. This basic kit includes Superman and his nemesis, General Zod, as well as an antenna tower and a very nice yellow car. For the LEGO fan on a budget, this is the one set to buy, since it provides key characters and a new vehicle design at a very low cost. This set also reflects an iconic Superman moment, in which the caped Kryptonian lifts a car over his head; Superman’s first appearance in “Action Comics” Issue 1 showed him in that pose, so of course both LEGO and the new film need to pay tribute to it.
The next set, “Black Zero Escape,” is also reasonably priced at $19.99, and this one includes Superman, General Zod in a different outfit, and Lois Lane, along with an escape pod and a small section of the Black Zero ship. Poor Lois is once again reduced to the damsel in distress role, but at least this set provides a female figure at a relatively low price, since LEGO has a habit of putting female characters only in the most expensive sets. Clearly we can expect to see some rescue and combat scenes on the Black Zero ship in the film, although the LEGO set shows very little of the actual ship.
The largest vehicle in the collection can be found in the “Battle of Smallville” set, which features a Black Zero dropship and off road vehicle in addition to Superman, General Zod, Colonel Hardy, Faora, and Tor-An. Faora, a female Kryptonian, and Tor-An are costumed as soldiers for General Zod, which gives this set a heavy villain population and also tells moviegoers which characters to expect in the film. The set includes wigs so that builders can remove the Kryptonians’ helmets and play with them as “face” characters, as well. “Battle of Smallville” retails at $49.99, the most expensive of the collection but still only midrange for a typical LEGO theme.
In addition to the Superman sets, LEGO has a bevy of new items hitting stores this summer, including a new collection of ‘Lord of the Rings” kits, new Creator sets, and a new Castle line. Visit the online LEGO Shop at Home site or find the nearest LEGO Brand Store to see all of the new toys, or check local stores like Target, Walmart, and Kmart as new sets trickle in.
