On Saturday, August 3, a week from tomorrow, join current Olympic Silver Medalist and Irvine resident Dotsie Bausch as she leads the latest Ride 2 Recovery out of Irvine. The Ride 2 Recovery is a national series of organized bike rides raising money to support wounded veterans. Its mission statement is: “To improve the health and wellness of injured veterans by providing a life changing experience that can impact their lives forever.” This is accomplished through many types of cycling programs.
The R2R ride will consist of two routes, one approximately 25 miles and the other 60 miles. Southern California has a proud military tradition and Orange County is no exception. As a tribute to our military veterans, both routes will take in the former Tustin and El Toro Marine Corps Air Stations (MCAS).
The route will leave from the sponsoring bike shop, A Road Bike 4 U located at Main Street and Red Hill Avenue in Irvine going south on Main Street through “downtown” Irvine. The shorter route will quickly take riders onto the San Diego Creek Bike Trail while the longer route will spin past UC Irvine to Newport Beach’s Back Bay. The two routes will merge at Barranca & Jeffrey in Irvine as riders head across town to OC’s newly emerging Great Park, which is slowly transforming the former El Toro Marine base. However, today, you can still see a mixture of the past and the future. The route will wind its way through the Great Park, past OC’s newest landmark – the Orange Balloon, and then through the remnants of the old base, including a portion of the old airport runways.
The route then splits with the 25 milers looping back to the shop via Portola Parkway and the Peter’s Canyon Bike Trail while the 60 milers head for the hills of Santiago Canyon. Near the end of the ride, both routes will pass the Tustin MCAS WWII-era blimp hangars, two of OC’s most visible landmarks.
