“So You Think You Can Dance” 2013 continued July 30 with more performances by the finalists still vying for the titles of America’s favorite guy and girl dancers. Closing out a round of well-crafted duets were Malece Miller and Alan Bersten, whose spicy salsa drew plenty of praise, including a blush-worthy pair of comments from guest judge Anna Kendrick.
Malece and Alan, who first teamed up after the July 9 eliminations of former partners Jude Zuberi and Jasmine Mason, met up with choreographer and “SYTYCD” season five alum Jonathan Platero to learn their routine for the top 12 performance show. Alan, a ballroom specialist by training, was delighted to be performing within his own wheelhouse. Although contemporary stylist Malece claimed to trust Alan completely, she admitted to being a little worried over how she’d handle the fleet-footed lift and trick laden salsa.
As it turned out, Malece had little cause for concern. Her salsa with Alan was sharp and precise, and dressed in a striking pink costume, she very nearly eclipsed her partner’s star with a combination of flexibility, amazing lifts and energy.
Nigel Lythgoe marveled over the “ridiculous” energy level required by the routine, and praised both Malece and Alan for sticking with it. Mary Murphy called it one of the fastest salsas ever delivered on “SYTYCD” and praised the duo’s collective athleticism. She was happily surprised by how “hot” Malece looked, and praised Alan for being a terrific partner for the diminutive blonde.
Last to offer up commentary was guest judge and actress Anna, who delivered a dizzying blitz of strange remarks for the duo to digest. She said the number made her want to take salsa lessons and “have an affair on a tropical island.” After remarking on their fearlessness and “deliberate” motions, she told them they should “make a baby.” Both Malece and Alan looked embarrassed, but said nothing.
To see if the pair survives the July 30 vote and advances to the top 10, watch “So You Think You Can Dance” 2013 when it continues Aug. 6 on FOX.
