“So You Think You Can Dance” 2013 continued July 23 on FOX with more entertaining performances by the top 16. But the most memorable part of the night may well have been the show-ending elimination of two more talented finalists, which whittled the field of dancers vying for victory to just 14 and left one of them crying big tears.
Early in the two-hour broadcast, “SYTYCD” host Cat Deeley revealed the identities of the bottom six hopefuls, based on America’s vote following the July 9 performance show. Finding themselves in danger were ballroom dancer Jenna Johnson, krumper Mariah Spears, contemporary artist Makenzie Dustman, animator BluPrint, tapper Curtis Holland and ballroom specialist Alan Bersten. All six had previously been relegated to the bottom of the heap by America.
Show co-creator and judge Nigel Lythgoe addressed the unlucky six on behalf of fellow panelist Mary Murphy and the choreographers. He informed Jenna that she’d earned a pass to the top 14, but the others would be required to dance for their lives. They did so one at a time, beginning with Makenzie, whose elegant contemporary solo was easily one of the best of the bunch, and concluding with animation by BluPrint.
After each potential eliminee danced one final duet with their respective partners, they were again called to the stage in the final moments of the broadcast. Although Nigel criticized Curtis for repeatedly failing to keep his shoulders down and knocked Alan for failing to excel in his new partnership with Malece Miller, it was BluPrint who got the boot on the guys’ side. He then turned his attention to Makenzie and a near-sobbing Mariah and quickly gave the latter the ax, explaining that Makenzie had “cemented her place on this program with her work tonight.”
Both axed finalists took to Twitter shortly after the broadcast to express their thanks to fans, with Mariah tweeting “This has been such and incredible experience on #sytycd ❤ so blessed I got to show America what I truly love to do! Gonna miss my #sytycdfam” and BluPrint opining “Being on SYTYCD was the greatest experience of my life and I thank all the judges and the dancers for helping me through this journey!!”
“So You Think You Dance” 2013 continues July 30 on FOX with the next round of the competition. The finalists still competing for the titles of America’s favorite guy and girl dancers include Jenna, Makenzie, Malece, Hayley Erbert, Amy Yakima, Jasmine Harper, Alexis Juliano, Curtis, Alan, Fik-Shun Stegall, Aaron Turner, Tucker Knox, Nico Greetham and Paul Karmiryan.
