Clara Beyer, a college student from Brown University, has created a Twitter account using Taylor Swift’s song lyrics to promote feminism. With all Taylor Swift’s boyfriends and interesting fashion choices, she spends a good deal of time fending off negative media, but even so, it’s doubtful Taylor Swift could’ve seen this one coming.
The @feministtswift account has gone from zero to over 82,000 followers in just over one week. Whether these people are feminists themselves or just trolls hoping to see a good fight between feminist Taylor and the real Taylor Swift is anybody’s guess.
Of the almost 80 tweets made by Clara Beyer in the first week, a few piercing barbs were made with lyrics from well-known songs “You Belong With Me,” “Mine,” “Begin Again,” and “White Horse, ” as follows:
“You’re on the phone with your girlfriend, she’s upset / She’s going off about something that you said /’Cause you think rape jokes are funny”
“I fell in love with a careless man’s careful daughter / She is the best thing that’s ever been mine” / Hold on, why am I a man’s property?”
“You pull my chair out and help me in / & You don’t know how nice that is / But it also reinforces the idea that women are inherently fragile”
“I’m not a princess / This ain’t a fairytale / I’m writing my own story / With a strong female hero”
If you’re in the “this is brilliant” camp, you’re probably already a follower, or will be now. If in the “this is hogwash” camp, you may be aghast to know that there are spin-offs popping up such as @feministkanye, a feminist slant for, ironically, Taylor Swift’s stage-stealer, Kanye West.
Whatever side you’re on, you have to admit, it will be interesting to see how Taylor Swift handles this. Will she bite back? Seek legal protection for her songs, name, or her likeness on the slanted site’s profile pic? Write a song about all of it? Only one thing’s for sure, Taylor Swift knows trouble when it walks in and this week, everything has changed.
