Taylor Swift fans were treated to an electrifying show in New England Saturday night at Gillette Stadium. For an outsider attending this extravaganza it was certainly clear that this young superstar seems to have maintained her likability despite heavy scrutiny from the press over the past year.
Cotton candy, freezie pops, glow sticks, screeching fans, ten costume changes and flying drummers still does not begin to describe the scene.
Like many before her, Swift is definitely cashing in on endorsements and the game has changed since the days of heavy hitters like Garth Brooks. Keds footwear actually has their own booth where fans can get a pair just like Taylor’s. Believe it or not, there was a steady line of people chomping at the bit to get their hands on some new sneaks.
So, is a Taylor Swift show everything it’s cracked up to be? To Swift’s credit, her performance proved that she has come a long way in more ways than one. Surrounding herself with master musicians and the best dancers that money can buy left every ticket holder completely entertained and fully satisfied at the end of the day.
Above and beyond that, her vocal ability seems to be like night and day compared to early career blunders like her “Rhiannon” duet with Stevie Nicks. Swift should be able to silence doubters if she continues down this road.
Swift shared with the audience that this particular show, being the first stadium show up for grabs this year, was sold out in the matter of minutes thus creating a need to book an additional night which she performed on Friday evening. She stated that she was so grateful. She should be considering how much revenue that created. Ka-ching!
To her credit, she proved that she wasn’t all talk. Showing her gratitude to the hearty New England fan base, she teased that she had a surprise for them. She declared a Bostonian as her hero and invited the artist to join her on the stage as a special guest.
Carly Simon appeared and the crowd went wild. Well, half of the crowd went wild. As you can imagine, the younger crowd was like, “Who is Carly Simon?” So, it was one for the big kids in the house. Thank you, Taylor.
So Carly Simon is Taylor’s hero? The shock wore off fast as soon as the two singers began belting out “You’re So Vain.” You could almost see “A-hah” suddenly appear over the arena. Swift has made a fortune writing in-your-face see-ya-later bye-bye songs about her exes. Now we all know who inspired her to do so. Unfortunately, Carly is better at concealing her subjects than Taylor and the mystery man responsible for Simon’s tune remains unknown.
The biggest surprise of all is that somehow Simon was convinced to perform. It is well known that the icon has severe stage fright. But, Taylor Swift seems to spin straw into gold on a regular basis so maybe it’s not such a big surprise after all.
As it is clear that Swift’s stage presence has improved dramatically, it is also apparent that this little girl has grown up before our eyes. Some of her outfits and dance moves are probably not exactly ideal for her youngest fans to mimic. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of concern however, by the parents who seem to be as captivated by the performer as their children are.
Older fans should probably refrain from trying some of her moves at home like her classic hair whipping. She has got to be close to breaking the world record for most hair flips in a row while continuing to play piano, dance and sing successfully. Many people would fall over after the first few without adding any of the latter feats.
Taylor Swift reiterated many times throughout the night that sharing her feelings via her music is truly what she is all about. Ironically, as the entire stadium almost drowns out the singer as they sing along, many young fans could not possibly fully understand her heartfelt lyrics. You would swear by the look on their faces that they feel it to the bone but it’s kind of hard to believe a seven-year-old truly gets it …
The good news for them is they’ll know which songs to blast when heartache inevitably finds them. They’ll be more than ready and perhaps a step ahead in the healing process thanks to Swift. In fact, they’ll most likely come back swinging thanks to her. Perhaps Carly Simon provided Taylor with that outlet a few years ago and she has simply decided to pay it forward.
So, Taylor Swift can and certainly seems to be very proud of her accomplishments but she also seems to be very proud of her Swifters too and well she should be. Girls and guys alike put quite the effort into their outfits and signage to show their appreciation for the country crossover sensation and their loyalty proves to be unwavering.
There were fans from all over the Northeast in attendance like Samantha C., a three-time TS Gillette Stadium concert thrill seeker from Rhode Island. She appreciates the young singers’ dedication to putting on a great show and that it truly is a performance. She states, “I like how she is a good role model” and that “she has really relatable music.”
Katie C. shared that she was excited to see the “I Knew You Were Trouble” singer for the second time. Sisters Lauren G. and Heidi G. were pumped as it was their first TS live experience. They added that Taylor is a great vocalist and they undoubtedly left the arena with that opinion intact.
The “Red” tour offers a great night of entertainment for all ages with little room for criticism. Of course, younger audience members would not have anything negative to say.
Did she talk a little too much about the same thing over and over again in between songs? Adults would probably vote “yes” but the kids were connecting with her every step of the way no matter how many times she told them that when she writes, she writes about what she is feeling.
Other than her repetitious speeches about her writing direction, the only thing adults had to complain about was that the beer vendors shut down at 9:15 p.m. with no warning which in essence has nothing to do with the tour as it is a venue decision.
Fortunately, beer was not a necessity as the performance by the TS squad was intoxicating enough all on its own.
The last song of the night packed enough of a punch that an encore would be ridiculous and unnecessary.
Fans left with confetti falling from the sky and starry-eyed little girls who may be just a little closer to achieving their dreams because Miss Taylor Swift has shown them it’s possible. Whether you’re a fan or not, she at least deserves credit for that.
In conclusion, every last person who has something to do with the “Red” tour deserves praise as they have put together a show that is actually worth the hard-earned money everyday people struggle to lay out for a seat.
