Teacher fakes illness: A Florida teacher finally confessed to her superiors that her heartbreaking story that she and her father were dying of a terminal illness was a lie. RTT News reported May 30 that the teacher faked the illness just so she didn’t have to go to work.
The teacher, who was identified as Ashley Barker, is a former first grade teacher at Laurel Elementary School in Polk County. According to the report, the teacher was able to fake her terminal illness for a year before it was finally found out that her story was made up.
For nearly a year, school officials believed the dishonest teacher’s fake illness story, and they allowed her to leave early and take a substantial amount of days off.
The district has since fired Barker after finding out that her story was a lie.
After school officials confronted Barker, she admitted that both she and her father didn’t suffer from a terminal illness and that she was at home when she said she was at the doctors or hospital.
When a teacher fakes an illness to get out of work, it obviously will raise concerns with parents of students.
“Wow. That’s kind of scary,” parent Ralie Ortiz said. “Because if she lies about that, she can lie about anything.”
School officials said that Barker sent 120 emails to the principal alleging she was very sick and her father was terminally ill.
Now that the school has fired Barker after she revealed she faked her terminal illness, surprisingly, she has hired a lawyer and is fighting them.
