On Thursday, Sen. Ted Cruz. R-Texas, launched a national petition to stop the immigration bill now working through the U.S. Senate, Breitbart.com reported.
The purpose of the petition, Tony Lee said, is to let Washington know of the strong grassroots opposition to the bill.
“This is urgent,” Cruz told supporters in an email. “We must stop this Gang of 8 immigration bill, which would give amnesty to an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants with no guarantee of a secure border.”
“The Senate debate is in the final stages and we need to send Washington a strong signal of the overwhelming grassroots opposition to this amnesty bill from Americans across the country,” he added.
News of the petition won the Texas Republican a fan at the Drudge Report. The site used a Superman logo modified with a “C” to highlight the link. Twitchy said the modified logo was “a hit” with readers.
On Wednesday, the Associated Press reported the so-called “Gang of Eight” bill would reduce illegal immigration by only 25 percent, according to a CBO analysis that claimed it would reduce federal deficits by billions.
The CBO also said some aspects of the bill would probably increase the number of illegal immigrants in the country, in particular, the report said, “people overstaying their visas issued under the new programs for temporary workers.”
The report also said average wages would decline through 2025 as a result of the bill and unemployment would increase slightly.
An amendment introduced by Sens. John Hoeven, R-N.D. and Bob Corker, R-Tenn., is intended to beef up border security, but Cruz told Breitbart the amendment would “put legalization before securing the border.”
Corker disagreed, however, citing provisions of the amendment like 20,000 additional border patrol agents, 700 miles of border fencing, and an e-verify system for immigrant workers.
“All of these things have to be in place before they receive their green card status. So that’s just not true,” he said.
