On June 25, 2013, after a commotion broke out in the Texas Senate, amidst yelling, screaming and the alleged arrest of one woman, Republicans passed an abortion bill that will reportedly close almost every abortion clinic in the state, according to the Associated Press.
The Texas Tribune reports that the validity of the vote is unclear as it is being argued by some the decision did not take place until after the deadline of midnight.
In an attempt to filibuster and kill the bill, Sen. Wendy Davis began the day by trying to speak continually on the senate floor for 13 hours. She was interrupted twice when Republicans argued she broke filibuster rules by improperly obtaining aid from a colleague who adjusted her back brace, reports NBC News.
The proceedings were live streamed and at times were watched by over 100,000 people.
The Tribune reports that Sen. Dan Patrick stated the bill passed 19-10, however, Sen. Juan Hinojosa interrupted him, saying the vote did not take place until after midnight.
Sen. John Whitmore said the Senate time stamp shows a vote was taken on the bill at 12:02 a.m., so the “vote may not withstand legal scrutiny, “ according to the Tribune.
