The local comedy scene in Denver is actually a lot busier than you may expect. Sure, you can always spend lots of money and head down to one of the big comedy clubs to catch a national touring act or big-name comedian, but have you considered stopping in one of the many local hot-spots that feature a ton of hilarious talent from the Mile High City?
One of the newest shows, and most deserving of your attention, is the new monthly showcase at The Bug Theatre, Text-a-saurus. The Bug is already home to the amazingly popular monthly Grawlix, featuring Adam Cayton-Holland and his team of funnymen. But the Bug is also home to the insanely clever Text-a-saurus. Hosted by local comedy-genius Deacon Gray, this monthly showcase takes four different comics and gives you three acts filled with plenty of hilarity.
The evening starts fairly normally, four comics take the stage giving you a set of their best material. This first part is crucial because you want to be paying attention to each comic’s style, so you can get a feel for just how the rest of the evening will go. During the first act, a phone number is put on the screen and you are encouraged to text different topics and hash-tag your favorite comedians of the night. Yes, this is probably the only show that doesn’t start the evening with “Please turn off your cell phones.”
Once the first act is completed and all four comics have had their chance to show off their goods, you take a break, get a beer, and prepare for what comes next. During that intermission, all those texts that you were encouraged to send in are compiled, and each comedian is brought back on the stage, one by one, and asked to make up a set based on the suggestions that you’ve anonymously texted in. Just a few of the highlights from the other night were “homophobic cats,” “Pitbull: The Musical”, and “Cuban Jews.” The comedian has absolutely no idea what will be coming at them, so it is a lot of fun watching him or her come up with a comedy set right on the spot. It’s stand-up, but it’s improv. So maybe it’s Stand-prov?
Then, to top the night off, all four comics return to the stage together for a comic jam session, where they all tackle the next few topics together. It’s kind of like hanging out at a bar with your favorite comedians. They riff off each other, poke fun at other comics, and just basically create comedy gold for as long as you keep on laughing.
At just $10 admission, you really can’t beat the price either. This new show is still catching on, and before you know it, it will have the sell-out popularity of The Bug’s Freak Train or Grawlix. So head down to the Bug the last Saturday of every month for Text-a-saurus, get in on the funny before everyone else figures out just how good it really is.
