For approximately 180 days, teachers become mothers, fathers, sisters, and brothers, friends and confidants to children throughout the nation. Not only do they educate students in math, science, history, and reading, but they also become an integral part of a child’s daily life. The most important thing that we, as parents, can teach our children is to thank those who pour into us daily and to give back to them.
A parent watches as their child blossoms and thrives each year under the care of a woman or man who has a gift to manage their classroom and impart wisdom and knowledge into every individual who enters their classroom year in and year out. Although parent volunteers are an asset to the classroom, a thank you note touches the heart of a teacher.
After speaking with a teacher in the Phoenix area it was shocking to learn that many public school teachers do not receive a token of appreciation or thanks at the end of the school year. It is also saddening as so many teachers give their time before and after school to extracurricular programs and activities, thus, sacrificing time with their own children and families to pour into others. Although families may have limited income and budgets as our city still recovers from a recession, it is important to teach our children that they must acknowledge the great works of those who have taught them over the last year.
While it may be difficult to think of a creative idea for a gift, if you know anything about your teacher(s), a gift card to their favorite retailer or restaurant may be a good idea. One thing to keep in mind is that teacher’s resources are often distributed for others. Consider making this gift something exclusively for them to use. Other gift ideas include:
- A handmade card or gift, like a ceramic plate or cup from As You Wish Pottery
- A picture frame
- A collage with photos of activities from the year
- A bottle (or two) of wine
- A gift certificate for a manicure and/or pedicure
- A gift certificate for a spa day or massage
- A gift basket with bath accessories
- An Edible Arrangement gift
It seems that Starbucks has become the go-to gift idea recently, yet everyone does not enjoy their products. If you cannot think of anything or run out of time, a VISA gift card allows them to go anywhere or do anything. It does not have to be extravagant or extend your budget. Believe it or not, for teachers it really is the thought that counts.
A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. ~Henry Brooks Adams
