Tonight’s episode of The Bachelorette opened with a short preview of what appears to be a dramatic season. This season’s Bachelorette, Desiree Hartsock, met Chris Harrison at a beautiful home in Malibu, where she would be staying throughout the show. Chris gave her a tour as they showed Desiree talking to the camera in tears, saying she just wanted to find love like her parents, who have been together for over 35 years. Before he left, Chris handed Desiree the keys to an aqua blue Bentley convertible, and she went for a drive.
The day of Desiree’s first meeting with all 25 men, she sat down and talked to Chris Harrison about her shortcomings on The Bachelor and her expectations for this season. They showed her get ready, and she finally hopped into her own limo and headed off to the mansion.
They showed short clips of some of the guys:
- Bryden: from Montana, has only been in one serious relationship, in the military, 26 years old
- Will: banker from Chicago, does Bikram Yoga, 28 years old
- Drew: divorced parents, mentally handicapped sister, alcoholic father, 27 years old
- Nick R.: also from Chicago, professional magician and tailor
- Zak: lonely guy living on 15 acres in the middle of nowhere, 31 years old
- Robert: entrepreneur from California, invented “spinning signs” with his buddies, 30 years old
- Mike: born and raised in England (now lives in Texas), lost his British accent, 27 years old
- Brandon: adrenaline junkie, Dad left when he was five, Mom struggled with addiction
Next, it was Desiree’s turn to meet the guys. Drew was first out of the limo and told Desiree she looked amazing. Brooks, like Drew, nearly forgot to tell Desiree his name before heading inside. Brad brought a wishbone for the two of them to make a wish with. Bryden hoped Sean’s mistake was his gain. Michael G. tried to retrieve Desiree’s penny from the fountain and was unsuccessful, so he gave her a fresh penny to toss into the fountain in order to make a wish.
Kasey told Desiree he works in social media and looked her up. He then proceeded to list off cheesy hashtags to describe Desiree. Will gave Desiree a high-five, told her she has the presence of a goddess, and he named her Athena. Mikey told Desiree he comes from a close family and could understand her relationship with her brother. Jonathan brought Desiree a card and key to their own fantasy suite, which she told him she wouldn’t need on the first night, since she isn’t that kind of girl. Zak came out of the limo without a shirt and asked Desiree if she would accept his abs. James told Desiree that loyalty is the key to everything before awkwardly telling her that he couldn’t wait to meet her. Larry taught Desiree a dance move that caused her to get stuck and rip her dress. Nick R. turned a napkin rose into a real one and presented it to Desiree. Zack wore a tuxedo and sneakers. Diogo wore a suit of armor and told Desiree he was there to be her knight in shining armor.
Chris got down on one knee and asked Desiree if he could tie his shoe. Mike R. offered to be Desiree’s McDreamy and McSteamy. Robert took his tie off and tossed it aside, commenting that he isn’t a tie guy. Juan Pablo is from Venezuela and gave Desiree a piece of chocolate. Brandon rolled in on a motorcycle and told Desiree he would need to get a two-seater for her.
Brian wore a blue velvet blazer to spice things up from his everyday wardrobe back home. Micah designed his own suit, which was atrocious. Nick M. wrote Desiree a short poem that even rhymed. Dan told Desiree he was so happy it was her. Ben brought his son, Brody, and sent him out of the limo first. (He took the child back to his grandma before heading inside).
As the Cocktail Party began, the guys noticed the plate of roses sitting out and wondered if Desiree would hand them out throughout the night, like Sean had. Desiree entered the mansion and gave a brief toast. Nick R., the professional magician, announced he was going to perform a trick and make Desiree disappear, and the two of them went outside to talk. Brandon swooped in shortly after and took Desiree away. Brandon presented Desiree with a coin his mother had given to him after she was sober for seven years. Desiree worked her way through all of the guys, who continued to get frustrated with each other as each guy stole Des away from the other. Ben told Desiree that family is everything to him, and he never married his son’s mother, but they are best friends. He added that his parents have been married for 35 years, and Ben and Des bonded over camping and hunting. Their conversation went so well that she went and fetched a rose for him. Ben went inside and explained to everyone that he was himself and told Des who he was before encouraging the others to find some time with her and do the same.
The guys continued to do what they could to get Desiree’s attention – there was dancing, a picnic, and of course, Zak removed his pants and jumped into the pool. Even though Desiree wandered off with someone else, she made her way back and offered Zak a rose.
Bryden told Desiree about his dog and time in the military. Since their conversation seemed natural, Desiree gave him the third rose of the night.
Juan Pablo took Desiree out front to play some soccer. The rest of the guys made their way outside and joined in the game.
Drew asked Desiree when the butterflies would go away, and the two of them shared a lot of laughs. She went and got a rose for him and told him she looked forward to getting to know him.
Larry told the other guys about his failed dance move before apologizing to Desiree. He was very awkward and went on a little bit too long about messing up the dance move.
Jonathan appeared to be drunk and explained to the camera that he likes to make bold moves. He pulled Desiree aside and told her he was trying to be funny before explaining he is completely different from her last boyfriend because he is not reserved and wasn’t afraid to make a move. He couldn’t take a hint, and Desiree actually said she needed to walk away to spend time with the other guys. When she finally got away from them, Jonathan came back and pulled her aside once more. He kept mumbling about going to the Fantasy Suite, so Desiree told him she didn’t want to, and she felt uncomfortable. She then asked him to leave right away, not waiting for the Rose Ceremony.
After the guys applauded, Chris Harrison came in and announced it was time for the Rose Ceremony before taking away the platter of remaining roses.
Desiree told the guys they had exceeded her expectations before handing out the rest of the roses, which she offered to Brandon, Zack K., Will, Brooks, Juan Pablo, Brad, Kasey, James, Robert, Brian, Dan, Chris, and Mikey. This meant Larry, Diogo, Micah, Nick R., and Mike were all sent home.
