England has it all with Kings, Queens, the whole Chess set, and now they boast about their team of expert nudgers. It has come to my attention, yes, I’m a little bit too laid back, America has decided to follow England’s lead and other countries, who have implemented Behavioral Insight Teams, AKA our new Behavioral Dream Team, AKA the Obama Administration’s new trend to make people do, what the government wants them to do. This sounds like the old subliminal messages that shot through the boob tube but this is the real deal. Twilight Zone was right. Is England really our role model? Did we forget about the Boston Tea Party, and I don’t mean the one at Aunt Sally’s house on Tuesday afternoons or the political Tea party. Funny, we didn’t think England was too great back then. My point being; America was a great country when we read and actually used the Constitution as our guide, not a dartboard. I’m not asking to go back to the horse n’ buggy days, and Father sometimes didn’t know best but let’s use our good old common sense, if we have any left. Did aliens hijack our brains? Evidently, our government wants to write a new constitution and the American people are too lethargic from eating truckloads of Twinkies, while texting their brains out.
100 years ago, we had a lower percentage of obese people. They worked in the fields or factories, they didn’t have all the labor saving gadgets, and eating wasn’t the focal point of existence. When they went into the grocery store, if they had one, there weren’t eighty kinds of cereal to choose from. In 2013, life has greatly improved with labor saving gadgets, constant communication, and entertainment. We have less physical work, more time to eat and the grocery stores are filled to the ceiling with high-fat, high-calorie, and high-priced junk food. Fast food chains are open 24/7/365, so we can eat around the clock. I am not throwing stones here, read further.
Here’s where it all hits the fan on the small scale…The Nudge Team of Experts, AKA, the OA, will regulate our food source. Not only will they regulate the food source, they will take away what is making us fat. Then the Nudge Team of Experts, AKA the OA, will nudge us by sending us to fitness classes. Then if that doesn’t work, they will come in and police our cupboards. Still not losing, a sonar lock on the refrigerator. My point…how far will this nudging go? If a person is too skinny, can anyone ever be too skinny in today’s society, will they force-feed them? How quick will a nudge turn into a shove, then a push, a swing and come to blows? What it all boils down to is money. The government is trying to prevent heart disease, which costs taxpayers bodacious dollars. Here’s a thought, fire the nudge team and bring in common sense. The American people don’t need to be tricked into doing what is right, or do we?
One study was recently done by creating a green path of footsteps into the produce department. This study made it very clear that shoppers followed the steps and bought more fruits and veggies. Don’t some produce departments have candy? The story reminded me of my mother. My mother’s words, “If everyone was jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge, would you jump off?” Only if I saw green footprints. First of all, I wouldn’t even notice the green path.
Here’s an idea, if visual green footsteps really, really work, why don’t the nudgers put an offensive smell such as dog poop in plastic sacks and place the bags on the shelves in the snack, booze, bakery, deli, and meat aisles? The odor will stop people from purchasing the goodies they shouldn’t be eatin’ or drinkin’. I’d hold my nose and dive right in for the cookies anyway. I’d walk a mile in the snow for brownies! It’s all in the bahavior…nudging doesn’t change bad behavior.
When my sons were toddlers, they weren’t much on green beans. Don’t even think about calling social services on what I’m about to say because they’re grown men. Little did I know, I was a Behavioral Insight Specialist! I put a dab of applesauce on the tip of the spoon with the nutritious green beans, and they didn’t taste the green beans. It worked..for the first three spoonfuls. Ever see the old Maypo commercial…did that too! It worked twice. Thirty years has passed, and they actually eat green beans, all but one of them. Point being, the government is treating us like children.
Government tells us, we need to be told what to do. Okay, how successful is our government? We give the government tax money and social security from our wages. The government can’t keep a budget and deficits are at zenith levels. So, you want me to put my faith in a failed system? You want me to put my faith in people, a government, who can’t take care of their own business? But, this Behavioral Dream Team, chosen by the OA, will nudge us all in the right direction? I don’t buy it. Balance the budget first, and then maybe you can nudge me. Right now, I am un-nudge-able! FIX the government before you try to FIX me. Nudge not, unless you would be nudged!
America, the government is all up in our business. We need to take a step back and think about this. Where is our decision making? Will we be duped by these nudgers? As free people, we have the right to decide for ourselves what we need and what our families need. We have actually lost sight what the role of government is. As a people, we have allowed the government to interfere with our lives and once they get through the door, they will control everything. How far will this nudging go? Once the ball rolls, it snowballs! A team of “experts” will decide on our health, happiness, and welfare and nudge us to their belief system.
As Christians, we have freedom in Christ. God gives us all the ability to choose. You will not get nudged from above to honor and serve Him. God give us all free will! You will be nudged, sincerely and lovingly by the Lord’s people to come to His table of plenty.
PRAYER: Lord, let not my words be vanity to me, but pure in heart, genuinely scripted, a desire and dedication to help those follow Your divine freedom’s path, which truly leads Home.
