Just consider today, how beautiful our Earth is, compared to the other planets in our solar system. It is a perfect place for the existence of life. Everything still works for the benefit of human beings, but the earth is not nearly as wonderful as it was when God first created it. Because “in the Beginning” the earth was “very good” until Adam & Eve sinned in the garden of Eden.
There are many, many things that have to be just right on the earth, or life could not exist. The earth is in the right position from the sun at 93 million miles away. If the earth was just a little bit closer to the sun, it would be too hot for life to exist. It would be too cold if it was a little bit farther away from the sun. All the water on earth would be frozen solid, and there would be no life. Water is absolutely essential for life, and the earth has an abundance of it, there is over 350 million cubic miles of water on earth. But there is not one drop of liquid water anywhere else in the solar system. There is no liquid water on Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (Pluto is no longer considered a planet anymore) or any moons that go around some of these planets, only our planet Earth has water.
Our Earth is the only planet in the solar system that has an atmosphere comprised of 21 percent oxygen. There is no oxygen on the moon, or any other planet. We could not survive here without it, but there is another very important reason for oxygen to exist on the earth. The ultraviolet light that is given off by the sun is deadly. You and I and all other living things would die very quickly if we were exposed to the whole range of light coming from the sun, including the ultraviolet light. It is the ozone layer produced from oxygen that protects us. We live miraculously on this planet, protected from eight killer rays from the sun, by a thin layer of ozone high up in our atmosphere. If that little belt of ozone, approximately 40 miles up and only one eighth of an inch thick (if compressed), should suddenly drift into space, all life on earth would die.
The axis of the rotation of the earth is not straight up and down in relation to the sun, but tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. The 23.5 degree angle is very important to us on earth. The angle is what gives us the 4 seasons on earth : summer, fall, winter, and spring in the temperate zones of the earth. This is where the most land area of the earth can be cultivated and inhabited. If the sun was always over the equator the northern and southern hemispheres would have winter all year round. Just think what would happen if the earth was tilted any other way than it is.
The solar system is like a big machine. It is very complex and orderly. The position of the planets and their orbits around the sun can be known exactly. This amazing accuracy and smoothness can be seen in the perfection that characterizes the journey of our earth around the sun. It takes the earth 365 days, 5 hours, 48 minutes and 48 seconds to make this journey with only a slight fluctuation. It is reasonable to assume then, that intelligent calculations about our solar system can be projected and realized, because it was designed by One who is intelligent, orderly, and dependable, the Lord Jesus Christ.
There are many, many other things on the earth that have to be exactly the way they are for life to exist. All those things just could not happen by accident or chance.
We know that for every design there is a designer. Romans 1:20 tells us that creation and nature reveals that there is a Creator and that there is no excuse not to believe that His grand design is not clearly seen. “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and God head; so that they are without excuse.” (Romans 1:20) (KJV).
