Two players remain for the finals of the 103rd Kansas Amateur Match Play Championship, being held at the Indian Hills Country Club in Mission Hills, Kan. Saturday saw contestants play the quarterfinals and semi-finals to cut the field to the final two competitors.
In the first quarterfinal match Trey Herman of Hays, Kan. took on Lee’s Summit, Mo. resident Ryan Argotsinger. Argotsinger got off to a fast start with a birdie on the first hole to go one up. Herman won the fourth to take the match back all square. On number six Herman made par to Argotsingers bogey to go one up. On the 361 yard par four eighth hole Argotsinger got the hole back with a birdie and the two were back to all square. Herman made par at 10 to go one up and at 12 Argotsinger conceded the hole to make it two up. Argotsinger made one more birdie on 16 to take the match back to one up and that was how the match ended Herman advancing with a one up finish.
In match number two Sam Stevens of Wichita, Kan. took a commanding lead against Harry Higgs of Overland Park, Kan. from the first hole winning it and three and four. Higgs won number six with a bar to take the score back to Stevens two up. Stevens made birdie on number seven to go back to three up. Higgs made birdie on eight to take it back to two up. Stevens won holes 10, 11 and 12 and the two played 13 and 14 all square to end the match at 5 and 4, Stevens favor.
Chase Hanna of Leawood, Kan. and Zach Vandolah of Kansas City, Mo. completed the only match that went extra holes. Hanna took the lead at number four and Vandolah took it back at six. Hanna then won seven, nine, 10 and 11 to go four up. Vandolah won 14 with a birdie and then strung three winning holes together at 16, 17 and 18 go take the match all square. On the 20th hole Hanna made birdie to Vandolah’s par to win the match.
The final quarterfinal match saw Colby Yates, Tonganoxie, Kan. take on mark Terranova of Overland Park, Kan. Terranova took the lead at number three and then gave it back on the fourth hole. Yates won number six and gave it back on the seventh. After that hole Yates never looked back winning the eighth, ninth, 13th and 14th to win 4 and 3.
In the first semi-final match Herman fell two down to Stevens with a par and bogey on the first two holes. At number six Stevens made birdie to go three up. He made it four up on number eight with a par to Herman’s bogey. Stevens made birdie on 12 to go to five up and Herman answered on 13 with a birdie to go back to four up. On 14 Stevens made par to Herman’s bogey to win the match 5 and 4.
The second match saw Hanna take on Yates for an opportunity to be in the final. Hanna made birdie on number one to take a one up lead. Yates squared the match on number four with a par to Hanna’s bogey. Hanna made birdie on seven to go back to one up and birdie on number 10 to go two up. Yates pulled off a par to Hanna’s double bogey on 16 but was unable to make up the one up difference on the last two holes.
The final round of Sam Stevens of Wichita and Chase Hanna of Leawood begins at Indian Hills Country Club at 7:50 a.m. on Sunday morning.
