On last night’s Cooking Channel episode of “The Freshman Class,” viewers are aware of the challenges of the four classmates of the Louisiana Culinary Institute. Jasmine, Jared, Tiffany and Ben are finding it difficult to deal with their struggles to attend school and still have a life.
As the episode titled “Ben’s Money Trouble” begins, the last episode recalls Tiffany’s problems with tardiness and her subsequent blog rant that put her on probation for the rest of the semester.
As Ben is preparing a meal at home, his wife gives him the mail. He is delinquent on his tuition and knows that his children come first. If he has to drop out of school, so be it.
Tiffany is trying to stay on track, but she needs her motivation back. Maybe the fact that she could be kicked out of school is what she needs. In the class with Chef Derrick, they are learning the basic sauces. The first one is the béchamel sauce, then they must make tomato sauce from scratch. Their sauces pass the taste test with just a pinch of salt missing.
As Jasmine is having lunch with her friends, a waitress who is also a student walked up to her and asked if she was a stripper because she heard something ugly about her. Why she asked such a thing in front of other students is a mystery, unless she was a troublemaker? Jasmine went into the bathroom because she was embarrassed. Back in the class Jared saw her crying and asked her why. She preferred not to discuss it.
Back in class, Chef Colt announced that he was hosting a gumbo cook off for charity. The winner will receive a cash prize. Tiffany is excited, and this may be just what she needs to regain her inspiration.
Ben is called into Chef Dave Tiner’s office because he is two months behind on his tuition. He is on financial probation and has a week to pay his tuition or his is out of school. He has a week to come up with the payment. Ben needs to work more hours in his taxidermy shop to come up with the payment money, but it compromises his ability to attend class.
The next day the class is still making sauces. Tiffany is finding her zone and progressing nicely. Jasmine has been in a very bad mood since the incident at school. She has much too much pressure on her as she attends classes and takes care of her daughter and working at the club until three in the morning.
Ben is busy working at the shop and cranking orders out so he will be paid. Ben feels that he is neglecting his family and has not been giving his kids the daddy-time they need. He feels like a failure and even called himself a dirt bag. His wife, Eugenie defended him, but she has three kids to tend to.
At the gumbo cook off, there were many heavy hitters. Tiffany and her team were cooking a pot of chicken, turkey and andouille gumbo. The competition was tough, but although they did not place in the top ten, she received a thumbs up from Chef Colt.
The next day, Chef Derrick announced that tomorrow would be their test of all the sauces and stocks along with vegetables, mirapoix and seasonings. This is the biggest test of the class, so far.
That night they all hit the books and crammed for the big test. Ben was working through the night in his shop and decided to study for the test before class. The test contained 107 questions, and it is rumored that this is the class that most people fail.
Ben’s work at the shop paid off, and he made his tuition payment. Ben also scored a ninety-one on the test, making him sure he made the right choice.
