The Genesis record certainly does not appear to be presented as a mythical account, and neither does it appear Moses intended his material to be regarded as such. All serious study would lead to the conclusion that the Genesis record is intended to be interpreted as an historical narrative.
The main issue regarding the Genesis record of creation is the alleged conflict between the assertions of Scripture and the current scientific theories of the day. All Christians should affirm that the Genesis record is a factual description of creation that should be understood at face value.
It is obvious that the Bible is not a scientific textbook in the sense of giving detailed technical descriptions and mathematical formulations of natural phenomena. But this is not an adequate reason for questioning the objective accuracy of the numerous portions of Scripture which do deal with the natural phenomena and historical events.
Here is a simple equation that started it all : In the beginning God created : Time + space+ matter + light times 6 twenty-four hour days + one twenty-four day (rested) = Creation week. (Genesis 1:1-31),(Genesis 2:1). “For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” (Exodus 20:11).
The Bible nowhere allows for long ages. One can search the Scriptures the beginning to end without finding even a hint of evolution or long ages. To Jesus, every jot and tittle of Scripture was divinely inspired (Matthew 5:18),(II Timothy 3:16), and He warned severely against adding any other words to it (Revelation 22:18). The Bible, therefore, would certainly not leave the vital doctrine of Creation open to human speculation. The man-made doctrines of the day-age theory, gap theory, theistic evolution and many more theories on origins is not true. The Bible is explicit on how and when creation occurred.
The Lord Jesus Christ recognized that men and women existed from the beginning. The Lord, conversely (Who was there, having Himself, create all things see John 1:1-3) taught that men and women were made essentially at the same time as the cosmos itself, when He said, “But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.” (Mark 10:6). The beginning obviously was a reference to Genesis 1:1, and Christ was specifically citing Genesis 1:26.
“In the beginning God created the heaven and earth.” (Genesis 1:1), And this beginning started only about 6,000 years ago, not billions of years ago.
