On Friday, June 28th, Canadian viewers watched the end of the episode where Nick Newman comes clean to his fiancé, Avery, about his past lies. Everyone on Twitter and Facebook have gone insane crazy over this, debating whether or not Nick should have told Avery before telling Jack and Summer. I see both sides, however, after watching the entire episode, plus watching this story unfold over the weeks, I think that Nick was left with no choice.
First of all, we’ve recently learned that the original paternity test that Nick took back in the day (seven years ago real time, 18 years Soap time), the results came back inconclusive. We all suspected that Summer was Jack’s child over the years, but for the writers to twist this as Nick’s lie, to me, seemed extremely out of character. Nick has been on his high horse over the years, lecturing Sharon, Phyllis and most recently Avery, on secrets and lies. For him to have done that with his own skeleton in the closet just seems so shady and dirty.
When Nick told Phyllis about it, they both panicked about how this would affect Summer. Phyllis wanted to tell both Jack and Summer, but Nick wanted to just tell Jack. That was a senseless and selfish act. Together they agreed that they needed time to figure it all out. Phyllis planned a business trip with Kyle, where she came on to him like the cougar she is. Sorry, but it made me throw up in my mouth a little watching her kiss Kyle. Poorly written, this storyline just gets worse and worse. If Phyllis is that concerned about her daughter, then wouldn’t she have come up with a better plan than making out with her daughter’s boyfriend/brother? No wonder why Michelle Stafford bailed on the show.
Nick wanted to tell Avery, but Phyllis made him promise that Jack and Summer would be first. Although everyone freaked out about Nick telling Avery, saying that she didn’t deserve to be the first one to know, I have to strongly disagree. As much as I think that Jack and Summer should have been first, Nick ran out of time. Avery is his fiancé. He made Avery come clean about Dylan. She told Nick everything about her life. Nick tried to contact Phyllis numerous times to say it was time to come clean, however, she was busy flirting with and later kissing, Kyle. As Nick left his final message, Avery walked in and overheard. Nick agreed that he needed her and it was time to tell her. Of course Phyllis walked in as Nick says “Summer is not my daughter”, and that’s where it ends until Monday for us Canadian viewers. This is what the US viewers will see at the end of the show on Monday.
As much as I agree that Jack and Summer should have been first to know, Nick had no choice if he wants to marry this woman. I put myself in Avery’s shoes. If my fiance was hiding a secret this huge, I’d want to know, too. The person you are about to marry should be your best friend and the one person you can trust with your heart and soul. If you can’t tell your fiance your deepest, darkest secrets, then you shouldn’t be marrying them. But now that Avery knows, they need to tell Summer and Jack immediately. Summer will probably turn to Avery and Jack to get thru the fact that both of her “parents” are horrible people. Nick isn’t really her father and Phyllis, well instead of not telling her the truth, cheated on her ex-husband, now boyfriend, Jack, with Jack’s son, Summer’s boyfriend/brother. Wow! Dr. Phil, Jerry Springer, have you seen anything this dysfunctional?
Now, let’s go lead our happy and simple lives and keep the drama for the television show. Clearly there is enough drama on the show that we could all deal with a little break from it for the next twenty four hours until it’s on again.
