In just two weeks, one of the first international dance intensives of its kind will be in full swing right here in NYC! From Thursday, Aug. 15 through Sunday, Aug. 18 The International Partner Dance Intensive (TIPDI) will offer adult dancers (with at least two years training) a diverse program with 72 classes in Salsa, Argentine Tango, West Coast Swing, Modern, Afro-Haitian, and Ballet over the course of three days, along with social dancing events each night. The intensive will take place at DANY Studios, in the heart of NYC, where dancers from across the world will gather together to expand their technique and work with renowned instructors. (See “FAST FACTS” below).
Artistic Director Paula Wilson looks back on her own dance background saying, “I started dancing late – when I was nineteen. A year and a half later I was training at Ailey, suddenly dancing 8 hours a day. As the the oldest in the program, I had a completely different perspective and relationship to it.” Wilson eventually continued her dance training in many other dance styles and taught dance throughout the world, though found her passion in production after working with various dance companies.
When asked why she created TIPDI, Wilson comments, “Here I was looking at this community of adult dancers, many of whom also came to it quite late – like me – and they all had this desire to improve. So many told me, ‘I wish I had the chance to do this when I was younger.’ I thought, why don’t I start a short, conservatory program, and let them see what is it to be a dancer…beyond their open classes or a familiar style. I felt like it was time to try and produce my own program.”
TIPDI is geared for dancers with training in at least one of the dance styles for a minimum of two years, meaning you don’t need classical and partner dance experience. In fact, TIPDI is the perfect opportunity for classically trained dancers and those with a partner dance background to learn styles within the other dance umbrella. Wilson explains this two-year requirement saying, “dancers who have trained in any form for this amount of time have a sense of where they are in space, the discipline to pick up choreography, take corrections and really work on progressing – this is the kind of environment we are trying to create at TIPDI.”
What’s most unique about TIPDI is that it offers dancers the rare, short-term experience of cross-training. Throughout the intensive, each dancer will take classes in all of the styles offered, along with two classes/day in their dance “niche.” Better yet, every style will be offered in three levels, to cater to every dancer’s background. (Level one is considered “an accelerated advanced beginners level which takes into consideration whatever your specialty style is.” …Think, ‘Salsa class for modern dancers,’ as an example.)
Marlon Mills, a TIPDI Master Teacher in Salsa notes, “I am excited to teach at this event organized by dancers, for dancers!” He goes on to explain that cross-training “in multiple dance forms is a great way to work on movement skills that are transferable. Cross-training gives you the X-factor – that special something you see in dancers that makes their dance looks wonderful and unique because they can implement techniques from other dance styles.”
Mills will be joined by seven other extraordinary Master Teachers including Daniela Pucci and Luis Bianchi teaching Argentine Tango, Patty Vo teaching West Coast Swing, Sasha Soreff teaching Modern/Contemporary, Adia Whitaker teaching Afro-Haitian, Elizabeth Douglas teaching Ballet, and Melissa Rosado also teaching Salsa.
There is still time to register and take part in TIPDI on Aug. 15-18. The intensive is certainly a terrific opportunity to challenge yourself and expand your own dance world – and all in a long weekend! To register please click here and use the promo code “TIPDIdance” to pay only $185 for the full intensive (regularly $225). Also, check out the other registration options (such as registering with a dance partner, with a group, or for only two days, three nights).
Wilson plans for TIPDI to become an annual event, encouraging dancers to return and progress each year. By 2014, the goal is that the program will expand, offering two events each year: a longer (7-9 day) intensive in Maine, as well as a weekend intensive in NYC. Connect with TIPDI to stay up to date!
