If you’re thinking about jumping on the juicing band wagon, but don’t want to invest your cash in a juicer: Check out The Juice Bar, located on Lover’s Lane and Inwood Road. Tucked away inside the Inwood Village shopping center, The Juice Bar is a light and bright spot with dozens of freshly pressed juices, smoothies and other healthy drinks to choose from.
Some beauty experts claim that juicing can make your skin glow and give you a wonderful boost of energy. So I decided to give The Juice Bar a try. I’ve enjoyed juicing at home for several years on and off but didn’t feel like busting out my dusty juicer and having to clean up all the mess that often comes with juicing.
As I walked into the Juice Bar, I noticed a room filled with Yoga moms and skinny girls that lined the counter waiting to order: The Juice Bar was clearly a popular destination. I was feeling ambitious and after scanning the menu for a few minutes, I decided to try one of their juice cleanses. Aside from offering ready-to-drink juices, you can purchase bottled juices made on site that come in ‘packages’ designed to help cleanse your system. These cleanses are priced from $34 to $68 per day. I went with ‘the day drinker cleanse,’ that included four preselected bottled juices. This cleanse allows you to eat a healthy dinner after drinking the bottled juice, every two hours throughout the day.
The staff neatly labeled my juices by number, in the order they should be consumed, along with the expiration date. The verdict: The juices were delicious. I enjoyed the consistency of the juice, I often get grossed out by the pulp that my own home juicer produces, and find myself throwing it out at the end. The bottled juice was smooth and easy to drink. My favorite juice was the skinny greens: made from apple, cayenne, kale, spinach, ginger, lemon and cucumber. The cayenne adds a nice little kick of flavor at the end, which is supposed to speed up your metabolism. At the end of the day, I expected to be starving but I was only a little hungry. For dinner, I enjoyed steamed veggies and tuna. While I wouldn’t say my skin was magically glowing, I felt radiant from the inside and less bloated than before.
The pros: The Juice Bar is a fast, convenient way to enjoy fresh fruit and veggie juices if you don’t have a juicer or the time to juice. It’s a great way to have a snack or meal replacement post-workout or on your lunch break.
The cons: The juices aren’t cheap. Expect to pay $7.50 per juice, more if you decide on one that’s bottled. It can be crowded, so expect to wait in line for a few minutes if it’s busy. Last but not least, The Juice Bar is closed on Sundays. So if you plan to purchase a juice cleanse for the week, be sure to grab your juice on Saturday.
