Summer is the perfect time to visit the Hampton’s with its fabulous homes, restaurants and shops. This past weekend we had an invitation to dine at the Living Room Restaurant at the famed Maidstone Hotel in East Hampton. In recent years a Swedish management group purchased,/redecorated and rejuvenated the Maidstone Hotel and its Living room restaurant.
We arrived at the Maidstone Hotel and were immediately charmed with the homelike building, wide driveway, and large porch filled with hotel and restaurant guests. The Maidstone is surrounded by gorgeous greenery and flowers slightly setback from Main Street. It faces a tranquil and picturesque pond and is minutes away from Main streets exciting shops and attractions.
Upon entering the Maidstone, we were directed to the “Living Room” restaurant, which was spacious, bright, and beautifully appointed. The wall coverings, curtains and decor, are referred to by the hotel as “Scandinavian Cozy”.
Adam, the Living Room manager introduced himself and briefly discussed the restaurant, and the swedish inspired menu , with an emphasis on fresh Swedish/Nordic Flavors, and simple preparation/ cooking.
Our culinary adventure began with an assortment of delicious appetizers:
–Three Kinds of Herring- Elegantly served in a 3 part white china serving dish with pickled onion and Vasterbotten Cheese. Colorful, tasty and a great way to start our journey.
–Horseradish Cured Gravlax– with dill pickled cucumber relish and horseradish cream.
–Sauteed Long Island Seafood- An assortment of seafood atop sour dough garlic bread with local cherry tomatoes and harissa aioli.
–Sea Scallop Carpaccio– Thin slices of Sea Scallops blended into a salad of apple and cucumber. with Bleak-roe jalapeno citronette. Served on white fine china in a glorious golden dressing. Unique and delicious….
Kottbullar- Swedish Meatballs with lingonberry jam, pickled cucumber, cream gravy and potato puree.
we also sampled a bowl of Iced Water-Melon Soup– made with feta cheese from upstate new york, marinated in sage and mint from the herb garden. A sweet and delightful summer treat…
For our entrees we chose:
Montauk Striped Bass “A La Plancha”– A beautifully prepared Bass dish with grilled vegetables and bleak-roe sauce. Tender, delicious, and artistically plated.
A large Grilled Lobster- Broiled and accompanied by a raw food salad of fennel, celery, carrots and radicchio with a truffle emulsion. Our lobster was exceptional! and we loved it.
It was now time to end our Nordic journey with two fabulous desserts. we sampled a sinfully delicious Dark Chocolate Ganache. A thin slice of amazing chocolate ganache flavored with Swedish Mackmyra whisky and served with lemon curd. Rich, velvety, and outrageously sweet and delicious. The lemon curd also was simply sensational..
We also tried an amazing Sticky Toffee Date Cake with Caramel sauce and vanilla ice cream. Over the top delicious…
The ambiance,, food and service of the Living Room were superb and provided us with an enchanted evening.
Kudos and thanks to GM Sophie Boner, Adam Lancashire, Living Room manager, and Serge Illel our knowlegeable waiter, for a fabulous dining experience.
