“The Lone Ranger” western movie starring Johnny Depp (Tonto) & Armie Hammer (Lone Ranger) has been in U.S. theaters for 26 days. It had grossed approximately $85,275,000 in 1,267 theaters. That is down from 3,904 theaters on its’ premiere 4th of July weekend. On Sunday July 28, 2013 the film brought in an estimated $475,000. The weekend gross totals up to $1,638,000. The accurate box office estimates will be out on Monday July 29. The Disney production cost had widely been reported to surpass $215,000,000. The western has also rolled out into 38 Foreign countries bringing the worldwide total to $163,875,000.
“Ranger” has brought in just as much money at the Foreign box office as in North America. On July 28, 2013 the Foreign total has risen to $78,600,000. According to the official website of “Box Office Mojo” that tracks all movie grosses. Here are three Foreign countries with the top box office receipts for the western. “Russia” with $14,773,349. “Australia” with $8,334,454. “Italy” with $4,164,682. “Argentina” & “Mexico” are not far behind those last numbers.
Hollywood insiders plus several misinformed Native American activists believe “Ranger” has lost millions. After its’ opening weekend they claim the film went in the red with $190 million. It is normal in Hollywood to trash big budget films when they under perform on their first weekend. “Ranger” brought in a small $48 million.
The box office numbers do not lie. $163 million is quite a feat after so many critics lambasted the film. It goes to show that movie audiences usually ignore critics. That includes Native Americans who enjoyed the film across the board. The western has yet to be released on DVD & BluRay. Those numbers may be huge for families who have not had the chance to see the movie in theaters.
“Ranger” was originally slated to release over the Christmas holiday weekend of 2012. Disney then moved it to Summer 2013. Hollywood insiders & bloggers have been complaining that big budget films have underperformed at the box office over the summer. That includes the recent “The Wolverine”, “Pacific Rim”, & the animated “Turbo.” The Summer box office is crowded with a lot of movies vying for audiences to see their films. Movie attendance is reportedly up 25% from last year this last weekend. Again, the box office numbers don’t lie.
