Nearly as far back as their decision to become an artist, they have been told that fine art is not a suitable career choice if it even an option. Many artists are discouraged from their dream of becoming a professional artist because of those who attempt to deter them from their passion. Unfortunately it is these people who cost the population their future artists. How can anyone make an informed decision with only a bias half of the story?
The diversities of art is truly astounding and can reach virtually anywhere, so to say that pursuing the arts as a career choice is wrong. There are many career paths that incorporate aspects of the arts to choose from. Having a career in the arts isn’t all about paintings and sculptures. Architectural drafting, advertisement, landscaping, interior decorating, graphic design, media, illustrating, jewelry design, photography, furniture design and assembly, etc. All of these career paths and many more need an artistic mind and creative thinking person to make it happen.
The advertisement industry requires someone who is able to take the subject matter being advertised and visualize in what environment will best describe the product or shows what it will do for the public. For example, an over the counter drug for say allergy relief will be in the backdrop of the outdoors with pets and spring time flowers in full blossom. Advertising would lose its effectiveness without the one who can see what subject matter will complement another, just as taught in any art class. Take landscaping, most believe that it’s all about what plants and trees thrive in what parts of the country. Yes knowing the climates, weather conditions and watering needs of different species of plants is necessary but having knowledge of the color wheel is also in the top ten of skills to have. People are attracted to colors. When a landscape designer is contracted to create a warm and inviting outdoor get away, they design it with the autumn color of the Japanese maple or summer time flowering crape myrtle in the background and the dark foliage of the hydrangea accented with its summer time blooms of reds, whites, pinks or blues. Patterns, shape, color and attention to detail are the bulk of jewelry designing. Where does one learn these things or what type of person is naturally gifted with these qualities? You guessed it, one learns this in an art class and the artistically minded are the people who are gifted this way.
A touch of the fine arts is woven through many different career options out in the world today. Some of these options don’t aways come to mind when thinking of the arts. Don’t settle for a career that is geared away from your passion the possibilities are still, as they have always been, endless.
