As the Melvins prepare to celebrate their 30th anniversary with a five week tour they passed through Columbus to play one of three one-off shows scheduled between the Maryland Deathfest, and the Scion Rock Fest. On Tuesday May 28, 2013, the genre bending rock wizards graced the A&R Music Bar with an amazing set full of legendary tunes, many of which have seldom, if ever, been played since the 1990’s. Lucky fans got to experience a set that was uncharacteristically dark compared to their works as of recent years, heavy, sludgy, and full of songs that were anything but Lite.
The set got weird right away with the distorted devastation of “Charmicarmicat”, followed by an aggressive performance of “Hung Bunny” and “Roman Dog Bird”. The guys then took a short break and returned to the stage renewed and fully ready for 90 more minutes of mind melting melodies. (see the full slide show for a shot of the hand written set list used by the band on stage) The set included songs from albums spanning the Melvins career from 1991-1996; ‘Bullhead’, ‘Lysol’, ‘Eggnog’ (EP), ‘Houdini’, ‘Stoner Witch’, and ‘Stag’. In total they played for about two mind numbing hours.
This is a band celebrating thirty years as live performing artists and they not only sound just as good as the used to, they sound better. Tuesday’s crowd was full of genuine fervor for the sound that seethed from the darkest reaches of the being we call King Buzzo (vox/guitar). All the while Dale Crover (drums) and Coady Willis (drums) beat the audience into submission with their blasting tribal rhythms and Jared Warren (bass) brought it all together with back up vocals that somehow compliment the obscure octaves spewing out of Buzz Osbourne.
Be sure to get out and see the Melvins live as soon as you can. I think this band has just got their second wind! The Melvins are co-headlining the Scion Rock Fest with Testament on June 1, 2013 in Memphis. Support will include Six Feet Under, Pall Bearer, Royal Thunder, Vektor, and Municipal Waste among others. July 12 – August 22, 2013 The Melvins will blight the country with the official 30 year anniversary extravaganza tour, with special guests, Honky.
