*church-eality*-reality programming based on church and church culture(music, artists, leaders, etc). -Fred Willis
Don’t panic, just breathe…Oxygen Media is bringing you a new reality television series! By the season’s end, you’ll be asking yourself one of three questions: “What in the world are they thinking?” What in the world were they thinking?” or “What in the world was I thinking, watching that show?”
Well you’ll have to wait until this fall to see what in the world these Los Angeles Pastors are in fact thinking. Yet another reality show featuring church people, Pastors of LA has been given the green light. A dubious precedent was set by TLC’s “The Sisterhood” which aired and survived its first season earlier this year. Now, the floodgates have opened as many leaders are opening their doors for film crews, but why?
To be honest, there really is no intrigue as far as this Pastors of LA show will go. Unless you’re a voyeur, there’s really not much to see with Pastors. You can put a good offering on the fact that you won’t see Bishop Noel Jones’ sermon prep, you will see Deitrick Haddon in the studio and you will see Clarence McClendon in a three piece suit! These three men, have all been in the bright light of cameras for all the wrong reasons, their love interests and extra-marital dealings. Maybe there is a sector of church people who actually gravitate to real life soap operas…gasp!
What most church people fail to realize is that there is nothing glamorous about being a Pastor! It’s the director’s position at an assisted living facility for people who “don’t need help!” You’re Dr. Phil for people who “don’t have problems” and D-List entertainment and gossip mill fodder for people who watch TMZ more than they watch TBN. Most importantly, Pastors are real people with very real problems, too.
Why the show? Why now? What is it about the Pastorate that has suddenly become television worthy? Ministry TV is thriving everywhere. Anyone with the resources to buy airtime is on television asking you to buy their goods. Peter Popoff has sold everything from miracle spring water to healing oil.. Let’s not forget the garden variety prayer handkerchiefs, prayer shawls, and other trinkets available for purchase from your television Pastors. Basically, anything you can find in an Oriental Trading catalog!
Of course there are countless others who actually do the work of the Lord via their telecast and who refuse the self-aggrandizement that a telecast affords. “Pastors of LA” has yet to air a single episode and already the reaction is mixed. Unless the show can miraculously shed needed light upon the weight of the call to lead God’s people; you can toss this show on top of the heap of uselessly intrusive and ultimately damaging reality tv.
It should be noted that you can undo in one season what may have taken your whole life to build up, just ask the women from “The Sisterhood”.

These sisters are unstoppable! Their newest career heights are fueled by their uber-successful show on WeTV. Their latest project was released in conjunction with the show. They have enjoyed immense success and have become fully crossover since the launch of their television show. It’s no doubt that others have followed in their footsteps in hopes of the same level of success and notoriety! Magazine covers, daytime talk shows, Stellar and Grammy awards have all been theirs as viewers welcomed the sisters and their family drama into their homes!
What did these ladies learn after their only season? This show didn’t survive its initial season and won’t be renewed or revived for another season any time soon! The show didn’t sit well with viewers from its inception. The descent into the everyday lives of Pastors and their wives showed how private and in some cases how volatile church leadership can be!
The worst part of this reality tv potion remains the fact that these women were cast and had no working relationships with each other before the show began filming. This led to the PR nightmares (like the “plantation” one family lived on) that were left irreparable by the season’s end. Cooky and outspoken leaders like the Lewis family and their inability to balance culture with religion also undoubtedly contributed to the show’s demise.
In the absence of the film crew, each family can return to normalcy and once again focus on what is paramount in their lives, leading the Lord’s people!
Marvin Sapp, Single Dad
To know him is to love him, for real! Gospel superstar has offered his life up for your viewing pleasure. The bad news is that nobody wants you to see it! It is available on youtube and continues to thrive but as of last month, Sapp offered his reasoning as to why it fails to draw an offer.
In the show, Sapp adjusts to a new normal following the death of his beloved wife. From what is shown on youtube, the show is a fun and interesting look into the life of Sapp who has taken on the role of a single parent. Which would you rather see, Marvin Sapp and his family or the Pastors of LA?
If reality shows had a name, I’d name this one: “Family Matters”! You’ve just gotta love a family that is really trying. Trying to be who they are without making a misstep. Trying to enter the next phase of life without neglecting what got them to where they are now. Trying to parent, Pastor and pursue destiny…in front of millions of strangers! This is the most enjoyable of church-eality television shows on the air.
Kierra loves the Lord, J. Drew not so much. Or at least that’s the perception. Viewers tune in to see what he’s going to do next, in hopes that he makes the right decision. The Church of God in Christ is put on display here. Bishop Sheard is a high ranking official in the organization and has to keep tight wraps on his family’s ongoing affairs. In addition to his church duties, he serves at the helm of Karew Records.
On the latest episode, Bishop Sheard was thrust betwixt a potential sibling alienation as Kierra’s manager is seeking to exclude her brother and producer from her newest project. Viewers are seeing him handle his everyday life, the church, the record label and his children.
Kierra is the darling of the family and viewers are thrilled to see their favorite singer continue to be a light! Viewers will be clamoring for more by the end of this inaugural season, that’s for sure!
Pastors of Los Angeles
What more can be said about this crop of Pastors putting on the line for the world to see? It would not be surprising for a petition to be raised or for pleas within the church community for these leaders to remove themselves from this project.
When did Deitrick Haddon start Pastoring again, anyway? Haddon will live out his struggle to decide about that on the show. Will he also record that R&B album he so desired while on the show as well…? Guess the public will have to tune in for that one. Early reports speculate that as far as this show goes, viewers are ready to tune them out!
