As weeks go—the one that just passed was what apparently passes for what I hear many people refer to as the “new normal.” Maybe so. But it still looks a whole lot like the “old” normal to me.
See, normal in the US has been what went before, genocide, slavery, Jim Crow, discrimination, sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, social engineering by means of the for profit prison-industrial complex, an apartheid public education system and healthcare for some.
Calling everyone a name was meant to intimidate, demean, malign, denigrate—you know “keep them in their place.”
The old “normal” throughout my life has been the majority population of Anglo-Saxons running the show. Whatever the A-S majority said was “okay” was “okay.” Any other idea was poo-pooed or dismissed out of hand. If “they” needed your opinion they would simply beat it out of you.
That’s the “normal” I grew up observing but not absorbing.
“Constitutional rights” came at a cost especially if you were Black or Brown. Fire hoses, police dogs, night sticks, arrests, lynchings, burnings and denial of services and more damning still the denial of “equal protection of the law.” That’s the normal I grew up seeing all around me.
The “old normal” was the vehicle that brought us to where we are today. If you don’t know just how you got here—there’s little hope of knowing where we’re headed.
You can’t help becoming cynical when you grow up hearing the fine folk of Texas red and most of the rest of the nation especially in the South call those they don’t like “communist” (now terrorist), illegal aliens, wetbacks, n—gers, n—ger-lover, lazy, welfare queens, Injuns, camel jockeys, rag-heads, fags, queers, dykes, drag queens and far too many other terms to make one comprehensive list here.
But it would be unforgiveable if I left out the one pejorative that especially Southerners and military people seem to like and use the most for those they dislike the most, “liberal.” Hell, even those in the media don’t use it much anymore—substituting “progressive” instead. It’s as if they hope no one notices. I notice.
Oh and those doing the name calling self-describe themselves as “compassionate conservative Christians.” If that weren’t so offensive it might be funny.
Why is it that those “compassionate conservative Christians” detest “liberals” so much? I don’t really know but perhaps it is because “liberals” are the opposite of everything those “compassionate conservative Christians” represent.
So if this “new normal” changes any of that—I’m in. But given the evidence of history I’m not holding my breath.
The history of the nation is rife with example after example of the results of those great “American values.”
The Supreme Court rulings of the week, sadly, are just one tiny indicator of what I’m talking about. Those rulings are just more of the same.
The headlines and talking points on the internet and social media provide additional insight into the psyche of the people who comprise this nation.
The on-going efforts of the majority population of Texas red to force their views on everyone in the state by once again denying rights, freedoms and liberties especially to anyone with a vagina have been in the news.
Denial of rights, freedoms and liberties is what compassionate conservative Christians are all about. They are the history of this nation.
The “new normal” seems to include a denial of reproductive rights to women, denial of voting rights to anyone not A-S, more money for the ruling class one-percent, cuts in “entitlements” but just for the poor. Entitlements for the one-percent are growing faster and faster.
I don’t know the “new normal” sure looks a lot like the “old normal” to me.
Far too many citizens of our republic are too caught up in “normal” old and new because they are beholden to it, brainwashed by it or simply too busy trying to keep body and soul together to have the luxury or the time to take a step back and take an objective look at what the “old normal” has created. For far too many it would be too frightening anyway.
From Texas Red: a cratered landscape of for profit prisons, deplorable apartheid public education, lack of healthcare and politicians and majority population intent on keeping it that way…
