Some two-plus decades ago, in August of 1992 Rob Liefeld’s Extreme Studios, under the Image Comics Imprint, published Brigade, a superteam comic that was created, plotted, and initially written by Liefeld and originally illustrated by Marat Mychaels. The team consisted of Battlestone, Seahawk, Coldsnap, Thermal, Kayo, Stasis, and Lethal. Now, some 20 years after its debut, Rob Liefield is getting the band back together, and is using Kickstarter to not only fund the re-launched comic, but to arrange to get free copies of the new series into the hands of whoever wants it.
Yep, you read that right, Brigade is returning to comics, and Rob Liefeld wants everyone to get a free copy of the re-imagined superteam.
According to Liefeld, the original team is re-united in order to defend against an invading alien armada and their conquering leader named Genocide, who is the champion of the invading D’Vor. During the initial assault, Seahawk and Lethal are taken prisoner and brought aboard the mother ship. Once there in the prison level they encounter a rebel underground looking for a leader to unite them against the oppressive rule of the D’Vor. At this point the original Birds of Prey (Talyn, Ironside, and Swift) return. Now fueled by alien technology and biology, only a re-formed Brigade can stop them.
This new series is a complete re-imagining of the original series by the original creative team of Liefeld and Mychaels, including covers by Mychaels and Liefeld that will be shipped randomly. The plan is that 100% of the Kickstarter funding is going to printing the comic and the hardcover edition. Liefeld’s personal goal is to either produce at least 100,000 copies of Brigade #1 or 50,000 each of issues #1 and #2. “That is the purpose of this Kickstarter,” Liefeld stated, “I’ll draw every day whether I’m paid or not, it’s what I do, but printing comics and giving them away for free must be budgeted and accounted for.”
Well, apparently the return of Brigade has been so anticipated by the series fans that the project has been fully funded, and now Liefeld is unveiling Stretch Goals for the project.
“Thank you to everyone who has supported and pledged to get us funded. What does this mean? It means I can provide 40,000 free Brigade copies to fans and retailers. I would like to increase that number and expand the amount of FREE Brigade comic books! With that in mind I’ve created fun, creative Stretch Goals incentives to reach the next stage.”
These stretch goals include the following:
Lethal Level Stretch Goal, $20,000 level: A prelude will be added to Brigade #1. That’s right a 5-page prelude revealing the comprehensive history of Brigade leading up to the explosive opening sequence will be added. This results in higher page count, more story; more art; making this an even greater value to everyone it reaches.
Supreme Level: $30,000 provides every one that has pledged $50 and above a free Extreme Sketchbook featuring loads of new designs by Liefeld and other Extreme artists illustrating the new look and concepts for Brigade and beyond. If the project hits $30,000 in pledges rthen this sketchbook is free and available only through Kickstarter.
Extreme Level – Stretch Goal #2 – $45,000 level – exclusive deluxe Brigade over-sized hardcover. “I love hardcovers and I want this one to be over-sized, bigger than the standard issue hard covers.” If you have pledged for the hardcover edition, it will automatically be Super-sized at no extra cost.
By funding this Free Initiative you are helping provide free copies of Brigade to comic stores in the U.S. and Canada as well as Free digital downloads of Brigade. The more money raised, the more free copies and issues that can be produced. A free comic breaks through all barriers and crosses all ages, a free comic provides a risk-free experience that can create a doorway into a new world of imagination and wonder. Brigade with its fresh, bold direction and characters will provide a dynamic comic book experience for readers old and new.
The amount of available free Brigade issues will be based on the results of this Kickstarter campaign. The current pledge amount assures that the first two Brigade issues will be available free. Additional issues will be added as funds are appropriated.
Fulfillment will be finalized once all available products are received from the printer. We will send notifications after receiving the books and then an additional notice will follow when individual books are being shipped.
