Recently I was contacted by The Spa @ Equinox on Franklin Street to check out their latest indulging offering – The Blueberry Facial. If you’ve got some cash to burn ($200) I have found the perfect way to bring in the fruits of summer (and all their wonderful antioxidants), to your beauty routine!
I walked in the front door of the Franklin Street location, and was met by the delightful and bubbly front desk staff who pointed me to head down stairs to the spa. As I walked, I must say I was a little nervous — the gym was amazing, top of the line, but I was a bit worried that the spa would be an after thought.
As I walked into the facial room, the dark atmosphere with ambient lighting put me right at ease. The facial included many standard offerings such as makeup removal, an exfoliation treatment, steam to open the pores, and a general extraction session where black heads are removed and clogged pores are reopened.
Once they put on the blueberry mask, I was completely having a zen moment! Whereas other masks have an acidic feel to them — and you know they are just drying out your face completely – this one felt much more balancing.
Blueberries are known for their high concentration of antioxidants, including Vitamin C and E, and when ingested are great for keeping skin and hair healthy. When applied topically to the skin, this blue super food battles dryness and premature aging through the infusion of essential antioxidants which work to neutralize free radicals.
What I really loved about the experience as well, was that there was no down time. Some spas will make you sit and steam your face, while they go into the other room – not this one! While your pores are opening or while a mask is drying, the esthetician would massage my shoulders or feet to fully relax me.
One surprising portion of this 50-minute facial is a portion where I received a facial massage. It started out real gentle, just running fingers across different sections of my face to increase circulation. It picked up the pace, transforming into a gentle slapping of the skin to in a sense, wake up the tissue and get it to hold its youthful shape. It was by far the most interesting portion of the facial which literally slapped me out of my sleep and woke both me and my skin up! At the time, I think I was a little taken a back, by this experience, but as a massage therapist’s daughter, I know the health benefits of a lively massage!
All in all, a great experience with the Blueberry Facial ($200) at Equinox Franklin Street. I would recommend this experience to any and all spagoers who want younger and brighter skin, just in time for the summer months.
