HitFix reported that after 16 years on ‘The View’, seventy year old co-host, Joy Behar decided to “call it quits” in order to pursue other opportunities, including a possible solo talk show on CNN. With her contract up in August, Daytime Emmy® Award-winner Joy Behar told HitFix she had been “neglecting her standup” and was also “writing a play“. At a taping of Behar‘s special tribute show to air August 9, TV Guide reported the comedienne was surprised by a slew of famous friends — including Regis Philbin, Joan Rivers and former “View” host Meredith Vieira. They continue saying, the tribute episode, emceed by rumored replacement Mario Cantone, who would be the show’s first full-time male panelist, closes with a special performance by Tony Bennett.
So who will ‘The View’ cast to discuss the day’s hottest topics on the hour-long weekday show? Behar told TV Guide,
If a man were to step in, it would be Mario (Cantone),” she says. “He was a huge supporter of the show long ago when we were desperate for support. And he may have a vagina for all I know!
Producers of ‘The View’ have not leaked information on a new host, but according to the New York Daily News, ABC has unsurprisingly announced they’re angling for someone “outspoken and passionate”. “Speculated” contenders to take the seat next to Barbara Walters, Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd are Brooke Shields, Ali Wentworth and Hota Kotb, reports TV Guide. (Jenny McCarthy has already been hired to replace Elisabeth Hasselbeck.) The New York Daily News says among other rumored contenders are former reality TV star and outspoken conservative Rachel Campos-Duffy, or singer Gloria Estefan, who could bring in Latina viewers.
With Behar having her “Joy Behar: Say Anything!” on Current TV (until the series ends, once the network’s controversial Al Jazeera America takeover goes into effect, according to the New York Times), HitFix speculates she may land at CNN, where she recently met with network head Jeff Zucker, but won’t say for sure. She claims to have had a “positive meeting” with Zucker and states that the struggling cable-news outlet “would be a great place” for her next series. According to ABC News, Behar previously hosted “The Joy Behar Show” on HLN. In a statement from ABC, the network said of the Brooklyn-born host,
Joy Behar has been instrumental in the success of ‘The View’ from the very beginning. We wish her all the best in this next chapter, and are thrilled that we have her for the remainder of the season.
Fans of Joy Behar will have to stay on their toes to keep up with this spunky redhead. Best wishes Joy, thanks for the memories, with the best of them yet to come!
