This week is a busy one in the Lancaster Area for the running community. Monday – Memorial Day – is a run supporting literacy and the popular five mile Red Rose Run is slated for Saturday. Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday the Lancaster Road Runners Club (LRRC) meets for its runs. This prepares runners for the Walk to Cure Diabetes next Sunday at Clipper Stadium.
The 5th Annual RR Donnelley 5K for Literacy Kris Wilson Foundation will be held Memorial Day (Monday, 27 May) at 8:30 a.m. at RR Donnelley on Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. The course is flat and fast as it loops around RR Donnelley and adjoining Long’s Park. Kris Wilson, of the Baltimore Ravens, will make a special appearance that day as well. The Red Rose Run is the biggest running event in Lancaster. This year the proceeds will benefit the Lancaster Museum of Art. It will be Saturday, 1 June. This 5 mile (not 5K) is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. at Binn’s Park on Queen Street between Orange and Chestnut Streets. The Lancaster Road Runners Club (LRRC) holds regularly scheduled runs on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday. Every Sunday LRRC members meet at Long’s Park for a run from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday runs will vary in location and are scheduled from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. The evening includes a run followed by fellowship at a local eatery. Tuesday’s run this week meets at Pour Girls Restaurant & Bar, at 11 Greentree Road, Quarryville. Thursday’s run is a trail run at Chickies Rock near Columbia. The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s (JDRF) Lancaster Walk to Cure Diabetes is a great way to show your support for all those living with type 1 diabetes (T1D) and to raise funds for JDRF, which is the leading global organization, focused on T1D research. Tickets are now on sale for the 2 June 2013 Juvenile Diabetes Awareness Night at the Lancaster Barnstormers game. The day – Sunday, 2 June 2013 – will begin with the JDRF Walk that afternoon at the Clipper Magazine Stadium. The goal for the Lancaster walk is $86,000 this year and is one of several statewide. The two mile walk is slated for a 4 p.m. step off and is expected to run until 5 p.m. The Barnstormers will host the Bridgeport Bluefish that evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. The JDRF will also be one of the beneficiaries at the annual Elegance at Hershey on Saturday, 15 June. 5K timed race up the storied Hershey Hill Climb course. There will be $1,500 in cash prizes awarded to the top runners. Runners will meet at 7:45 a.m. on Boathouse Road, behind the Hotel Hershey. For more information, visit www.theeleganceathershey.com.
The Manheim Rock-N-Glow 5k is also slated for 1 June. This is the first year for this 5K which is organized by the Manheim Downtown Development Group. This will be an evening race. A one mile fun run will be held at 8 p.m., followed by the 5K at 9 p.m. An after party with awards, music and vendors, will be held afterwards in Market Square. Quarryville will be home to the Second Annual Bob Bard 5K on Saturday, 15 June. This is a charity run, meaning you accept donations from friends, family and co-workers versus a straight registration fee. All proceeds raised will go to the National Brain Tumor Society. Runners should meet at the upper pavilion area of Memorial Park between 7:30 and 8:45 a.m. on race day. The race will begin at 9 a.m. with an awards ceremony to follow. Runners may also pick up their packet early Friday, 14 June from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 119 W. State St. Quarryville, PA 17566. CASA of Lancaster County is holding the 2nd Annual CASA of Lancaster County Superhero 5K & Kids Fun Run on Saturday, 15 June at 8:30 a.m. at the Hempfield High School Stadium. The cost is $25 pre-registration (by 25 May) or $30 the day of the race. Online registration is open through 14 June at active.com. Runners who register before 12 June may pick up their registration package on Friday, 14 June between 5 – 7 p.m. at the CASA office. Awards will be given to the top three male and female overall finishers. Awards are also offered in each age group. No duplicate awards will be given. Children under 12 years old may also be awarded Best Costume awards for individual or for a group. Headphones are discouraged, as are baby joggers, strollers, roller/in-line skates, and pets. Register before 25 May for the 5K for a free t-shirt. Kids Run Fun participants who register before 25 May will receive a superhero cape!
Mark your calendars now for the 1st Annual Race against Homelessness CHOC Walk. This race is scheduled for Saturday, 22 June at 9 a.m. at the Overlook Park in Manheim Township. Walkers will begin after the runners start. There will be a two hour limit for the walking route; hence the event ends by 11:30 a.m. Registration is $20 before 8 June and $25 after that up to and including the day of the race. The deadline for online registration is 19 June. Runners can register online through active.com. Awards will be given to the top three male and female overall finishers. CHOC, the Community Homeless Outreach Center, is program of Tabor Community Services and Water Street Ministries which extends assistance across the Lancaster County.
