Obie award-winning play by Ariana Reines looks at the life of a complicated invention
Alexander Graham Bell and his assistant Thomas A. Watson debate over the effects their invention may have on society as they reluctantly revolutionize personal communication. Miss St. struggles to free her real inner voice while a patient of Dr. Carl Jung. An ethereal world of disconnected voices cry out to one another over the wires.
This is the gist of “Telephone” as Theater Ninjas finish up their captivating seventh season with this regional premiere of the 2009 Obie-winning show by poet, playwright and author, Ariana Reines. Finishing up three months of collaboration with the Cleveland Museum of Art as part of the “Pompeii” exhibit, “Telephone is the perfect vehicle to bring a year of unique theater creations combined with singular partnerships that opened up new creative opportunities for Theater Ninjas.
A verbal puzzle of language and humor, “Telephone” attempts to utilize poetry and history to investigate our human verbal interactions with one another in this society filled to overflowing with a plethora of highly technical devices.
Inspired by “The Telephone Book: Technology – Schizophrenia – Electric Speech” by Avital Ronell, “Telephone” explores how our investment in communications technology (from telephones to television to the internet) has made our communities grow to the international level; while helping us alienate ourselves at the same time.
Director Jaime Bouvier affirms, “This will be one of those transformative and magical experiences that you will not want to miss.”
Integration with technology is a crucial element of this production and furthers a hallmark of Theater Ninjas’ mission by playing with the boundaries between actor and audience. Audiences will be invited to record snippets of the script in audio and video prior to the show and see their contributions come to life in the third
