And the best of everything also includes Toby Keith’s own “Wild Shot” with Worm Mezcal Silver. Now we know what’s in that Red Solo Cup!
Introduced in 2011, Toby’s Keith’s “Wild Shot” Mezcal Silver has earned The Gold Award under the scrutiny of the world’s finest connoisseurs from “The Fifty Best” choices. This is from the 2013 list of The Fifty Best. The Fifty Best is the equalivent of the Oscars in film, but the best in restaurants, places, food and so much more, including the crème’de la crème of wine, liquor and spirits.
Toby says, “I have always been fascinated with Mexico and the drink Mezcal. It is a part of my life. Mexico is a theme that runs through many of my songs. The tradition and history of Mezcal is magical to me. Mezcal dates back to the 16th Century warriors celebrating the defeat of their enemies. There is an agave worm in every true bottle. And, the worm is not there for the look, it is there to be eaten. It is believed that the worm will bring a special experience and every individual will feel something different. I believed there was a complete void in the market place in getting this drink to the average person, so it seemed natural for me to start a business selling Toby Keith Mezcal “Wild Shot.” And yes, there is a worm in it.
The Fifty Best held a “blind” tasting of 11 mezcals with 17 pre-qualified judges. Strict tasting rules were applied. The order of service was established beforehand by lottery. Each of the mezcals were poured into fresh glasses from new sealed bottles, and served at slightly above room temperature. The reposados and añejos were tasted after the blancos (joven). Only ice water, neutral unflavored crackers and chips were available to cleanse the palate. Ok, I’m in!
The judges wrote down their impressions of each product on score sheets. The scoring was done on a 5-point system, with 5 as the best. 2013 Double-Gold, Gold and Silver medals are awarded based on a set range of final point scores received from the judges. There were no bronze medals awarded for this tasting.
