With all the focus on Theros lately, it won’t be long before we see a set trailer. August is fast approaching, after all, and that’s when previews for the fall set start to roll out. Every expert expansion nowadays gets its own animated and voice-acted trailer composed of pieces of card art from the set, giving us crucial hints about the storyline and glimpses of the artwork of the set. Here’s what we already can guess about the teaser trailer:
Elspeth will narrate. More often than not, the individual telling the story in a set trailer is a planeswalker. New Phyrexia may have had nameless Mirran and Phyrexian voices, but Innistrad featured Garruk, Dark Ascension had Sorin, and Avacyn Restored split up between Thalia and Liliana. Then Return to Ravnica was handled by Jace, and Dragon’s Maze had Ral; Gatecrash, anomalously, had Lazav. Essentially, the odds are in favor of a planeswalker to take the spotlight, and Elspeth has been hyped up as the single central character of Theros’s story.
We’ll learn the name of the red god. Since this trailer will have to serve as an introduction to a completely unfamiliar plane, Elspeth will probably rattle off the names of the five major gods of Nyx, since they are rather unusual in Magic terms. If the missing red god is too cool to have spoiled yet, the trailer would be the opportune time to do so.
We’ll find out some monster species. Although Theros is lush and beautiful, it’s also exceedingly dangerous outside of the cities. Its wilderness is crawling with monsters of every description. And since R&D is putting its own spin on the ancient Greek source material, there will more than likely be some unexpected monsters in the trailer.
