As usual, there are plenty of things to do here in LA, so here are a few suggestions of things to do this weekend and next week.
Season 2 of AXS TV’s hit, The World’s Greatest Tribute Bands, has already broken records, and this week features The Fab Four, the premier tribute to the music of The Beatles. Doors open on Monday night at 7 p.m. at the Roxy Theatre on the Sunset Strip, with the show starting promptly at 8 p.m. Tickets are free and are available here
For all you sports fans out there, MLB heads into the second half with the NFL and NBA getting ready for pre-season (NFL kicks off next Sunday). Check out what our hometown teams (Angels and Dodgers) have created to get you into their stadiums. Where do you like to catch the action, when you’re not at the ballpark? Don’t forget all the great sports bar in our area, including my favorite, Hooters in Burbank.
Reading is always a great escape, and our local bookstore, Skylight Books is one of the best around. Tonight at 7:30 p.m., Oscar winning director William Friedkin will read from The Friedkin Connection. On Saturday at 5 p.m., Susan Choi will read from My Education. Sunday at 5 p.m., Michael Woodworth Fuller will read from Legacy. Finally, next Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., Alexander Marsik will read from A Marker to Measure Drift. Take some time and enjoy this jewel of Los Feliz, where you can catch up on some great reads and do some shopping.
It’s never a bad time to catch a movie, and this weekend is no exception. This weekend, at the Vintage Cinemas Los Feliz 3 you can catch Only God Forgives, The Way, Way Back or The Conjuring, screening at 1:30 p.m., 4:15 p.m., 7 p.m. or 9:45 p.m. Over at the Vintage Cinemas Vista Theatre, catch The Wolverine, screening at 12:45 p.m., 3:45 p.m., 6:45 p.m. and 9:50 p.m.
Plenty of plays out there for all you theater lovers. Check out www.plays411.com and www.Goldstar.com for discounts and listings. I highly recommend Resurrection of the Ants, now playing at the Hayworth: Upper Level through July 28. In addition, it’s closing weekend for the Best of Fringe Extensions, so check for shows you might have missed. I’m checking out Real Housekeepers of Studio City tonight and Blindsided tomorrow night. There are also great venues in town to catch the latest indie music. Don’t miss these great shows this week:
For something different, stop by Simply Thai on Hillhurst and check out the Tuesday LA Underground Superstars show, featuring four different acts each week as well as the Wednesday and Thursday night music – the food is divine and the music sublime – it’s a can’t miss combination.
This week at the Greek Theatre, catch Amy Grant as she celebrates the release of her first new album in more than 10 years on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., with her special guest Brandon Heath.
This week at the Hotel Cafe is going to be incredible. I recommend the following shows: Sweet Talk Radio at 8 p.m. tonight, followed by Javier Dunn at 9 p.m.; Kris Angelis’ Record Release Show on Sunday at 8 p.m., followed by Zane Carney at 9 p.m.; Amie Miriello at 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Joel Eckels and the Wreckards at 10 p.m. on Thursday.
Over at WitZend in Venice, I recommend the following: GreenRoots presents The Sound Lab at 7 p.m. on Saturday and Open Mic at 7 p.m. on Sunday.
If you enjoy the outdoors, don’t forget about the local farmers’ markets on Wednesdays from 12-6 p.m. at Barnsdall Park and on Sundays from 10-4 p.m. at the Post Office. There’s also a farmer’s market at the Autry Museum in Griffith Park on Saturdays from 10-5 p.m.
Don’t forget iTunes, ReverbNation and YouTube – be adventurous and be the first to discover new talent – then share it with us all.
