June has arrived and while summer in San Diego typically means less in the way of bird watching, it is still a good time for nature walks and activities in general. The weather in June is usually mild with clouds in the morning and afternoon sun. Here is a short list of nature-related activities for the weekend of May 31 to June 2nd, 2013 in all parts of the county. All events are free unless otherwise noted.
Crestridge Ecological Reserve needs people to help with restoring damaged grasslands at the reserve. They need people to weed on Saturday, June 1st and will provide tools, gloves, and snacks. The Buena Vista Audubon Society is holding their monthly bird count around Whelan Lake on Saturday, June 1st beginning at 8 a.m. All levels of birders are welcome. Take the I-5 to the CA-76, turn left at Douglas, continue on to North River Road and turn left to the entrance gate. Bring a lunch. Call John Haddock at 760-941-7824 for more information.
San Diego Audubon Society volunteers will be leading a nature walk near Julian at the east entrance to the Santa Ysabel Preserve on Sunday, June 2nd. This is the entrance that is just north of Julian on Farmer Road near Wynola Road. The walk starts at 8 a.m. and runs until 11 a.m. For more information, call 858-571-5076 for more details.
The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve will have their bi-monthly bird walk on Sunday, June 2nd beginning at 3 p.m. Possible bird sightings may include the rare light-footed clapper rail and yellow-crowned night heron.
