May 18: Open house, Ayers Mansion, 2 -6 p.m. State and 9th St. This mansion long lay in sore need of attention. A beautiful home built by James Wallace in 1850 as part of the South 9th Street Hill home building boom. It was expanded in 1890. Later it was purchased by Col. Howard Ayers, an attache to Douglas MacArthur. The home was finally purchased by local attorney Brian Dekker and is undergoing renovation (link). This weekend the public will be allowed to see the progress of the ongoing renovation. The Wabash Valley Trust (link) will receive the proceeds from the $10 tickets. You may also make donations to the WVT.
May 18: Fort Ouiatenon opens for the season. 1-5 p.m. TCHA (link) will open the blockhouse for the season this Saturday. Come out and see traditional crafters at work.
May 18: Heritage Transportation Festival, Delphi Canal Park, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (link) This annual event opens the boat season at the canal. Enjoy the antique vehicles ranging from cars to fire trucks. Live music will be provided throughout the day. The Delphi canal boat will make several runs and the pioneer village will be open. Family friendly, free event, fee charged for the canal boat trip. You can rent a bike, paddleboat or pedal trolley from Noble Bikes (link) to enjoy the day.
