Summer is the high time for movies to come out. The year’s best movies usually are released at this time as the kids are off from school and it offers a few hours of cool air during those blistering summer afternoons. In recent years, we have been treated to some ultimate blockbusters (like The Dark Knight), but this year it doesn’t look to be much going.
Overall, it looks like it will be a slow summer at the box office with really only two comic book superhero movies coming out, but it’s really ok to have a slow year. The last few years have been hectic with movies and next year will be jammed packed with expected releases of X-men First Class 2, Captain America 2, Thor 2, and The Amazing Spider-man 2.
So I may be the only one happy with a slow summer but I just think of it as a way of preparing for what’s to come summer 2014.
#5: Despicable Me 2
Starring: Steve Carrell (Crazy, Stupid, Love), Kristen Wiig (Bridesmaids), Benjamin Bratt (Snitch)
Gru and all his minions return to the big screen as Gru helps try and take down the Villian League. This is the perfect movie for the summer to see with the kiddies. Those adorable little yellow minions are back and I’m sure to steal every scene that they are in. The first movie was a surprisingly good movie and I think that this is the perfect movie to see with the family.
#4: The Mortal Instruments
Starring: Lily Collins (Abduction), Jamie Campbell Bower, Robert Sheehan (Season of the Witch)
In yet another young adult novel series come ot the big screen, we get the next Twilight series. This series has got it all: vampires, fairies, werewolves. It’s kind of a teen-version of True Blood. The book series has a very strong fan based which will certainly draw in the fans to see the movie multiple times, especially if it loyal to the book.
#3: Man of Steel
Starring: Henry Cavill (The Cold Day of Light), Amy Adams (Trouble with the Curve), Russell Crowe (Les Miserables)
In one of the few super hero movies to come out this summer, this reboot is trying to save what was once a beloved superhero movie. Henry Cavill takes over the cape and shows a deeper and darker side of the beloved hero. This is the 2nd series that Christopher Nolan has his hands on (after of course The Dark Knight) and will undoubtedly leave his own mark on the movie. Hopefully this movie can rejuvenate the series and bring back it’s loyal fans that they seemed to have lost when the last film came out.
#2: Kick Ass 2
Starring: Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Savages), Chloe Grace Moretz (Dark Shadows), Jim Carrey (The Incredible Burt Wonderstone)
This movie snuck up on me. I had heard about mostly through other medias and wondered what all the hoopla was about. After seeing it, I can see why every media was talking about it. It is funny, has action, drama, and a smidge of romance. It’s like a real super hero movie, but a lot more realistic for the fact that the heroes actually get hurt and bleed and look like normal people.
#1: The Wolverine
Starring: Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Famke Janseen (Taken 2), Will Yun Lee
In the sequel to probably the only X-men spin-off that anyone would see, Hugh Jackman returns as Logan aka The Wolverine. He travels to Japan in an attempt to try and rid of his immortality. It is hard to find a better superhero adapted character then Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and the first movie was so perfect that it really gave life back to X-men. I would expect this to be the biggest movie of the summer especially since this will probably be one of the last times we see Hugh Jackman in this iconic role.
