How many hats can you wear? For Angela Mraz, it’s easy to lose count. A top fitness model and International Sales Director representing the company Maximum Human Performance, Angela has endured the test of time while remaining at the apex of her game. How does she do it?
Examiner got a chance to ask —
Danny: When did you realize you could, and would become a contending force in the world of fitness modeling?
Angela: At first it was just a hobby, it was something I never tried in my life — something that was, and still is challenging — at the same time exciting! To be able to transform my body to the point I could wear a little tiny bikini, and get on a stage in front of hundreds of people with a panel of 10 judges who compared me to 20, 30, 100, other girls in amazing shape, was one of the best highlights of my life. I guess at that moment…when you step on that stage and realize that you have accomplished your goal, that is when you realize you are capable of doing just about anything in life! Including the power to motivate others.
Danny: What was it like seeing yourself for the first time on the cover of a major fitness modeling magazine?
Angela [smiling]: It was amazing! When I started competing, that was one of my ultimate goals. Great feeling to know that people are willing to open doors of opportunities to you when they see all the hard work you continually put in day after day after day! I was, and still am very proud of myself — always extremely excited to see that one of my dreams was turned into reality!
Danny: For you, it seems quitting is not an option. Was there ever a time where you felt like “this is not for me,” but continued grinding forward?
Angela: NEVER! Training and eating healthy is now part of my life, a lifestyle that keeps me happy, confident, content, extremely healthy and young. [smiling]: Sure there are mornings at 4:20 am, when I feel like staying in bed and sleeping in late. Sure there were times when I ended up crying, throwing up at the gym because of my intense workouts. Times when my body was so sore that I could not even lift my arms to do my hair, but I knew that I had to get to the gym and get my workouts done, because I had a competition coming up. There were moments when I felt I was putting my family to the side, because I had to do an extra hour of cardio after work. BUT I never ever gave up! I will never stop training and taking care of my body! Working out is a huge part of my physical and mental health. How can I stop?
Danny: Throughout your fitness modeling career, what has proven to be the most challenging?
Angela: I will say learning to balance work and preparing for shows. Having a full time job, being a mother of a wonderful boy, an amazing wife, and a loving daughter, could get really stressful. At times it makes your life a little crazy, but somehow I was able to manage it all and do it right! I consider myself a very intense and dedicated person. When I decide to do something — I do it the best I can — and that helps me a lot.
Danny: For those out there who may know this, and for those who may not; can you briefly touch on the difference, and or similarities between body building and fitness modeling?
Angela: Bodybuilding is a wonderful creation of muscle fullness combined with symmetry and definition. Fitness, or figure modeling, is more of a toned, fit look, with a highly precise defined physique. Both fitness modeling and bodybuilding require similar amounts of hard work.
Danny: Your character comes across naturally, doesn’t seem forced — did you work on developing Angela Mraz the fitness model superstar, or is it simply second nature?
Angela [smiling]: I am who I am. What you see in magazines, videos and pictures, is who I am. I grew up with a lovely family where we gave each other lots of love, and showed respect. A family who taught me to help others, to be truthful and happy! I don’t consider myself a superstar, I feel more like a motivator for others looking to improve their lives, and reach their life’s goals.
Danny: MHP’s nutritional products are certainly at the top of their game, “the proof is in the pudding” — what’s it like to represent and work directly with them?
Angela: I am very lucky to be part of this amazing company. One of my goals when I first started competing was to be able to work for, and represent a supplement company. But I never in a million years would have thought I was going to be lucky enough to work for the best of the best in the world! I am thankful for Team MHP. Thankful for the opportunity they gave me many years ago — taking part in their demos and trade shows. After a few years I made my way into domestic sales, and now I am the International Sales Director for MHP! I absolutely love my job!
Danny: You’re a proud mom and family woman — how do you juggle your stardom and family life? And as a fitness model mom, do you encourage nutrition in the home?
Angela [smiling]: Somehow I am able to manage everything pretty well! My boy is now 15 years old. Yes, a teenager — but I cannot ask for a better son. He is my life. He makes it extremely easy for me to deal with him. I do my best to always be there for him, to be the best mom he could have. My husband is very supportive with everything, he makes my life super easy, and I truly thank him for this. [smiling]:Yes we all eat chicken and broccoli every day — just kidding — overall we eat pretty healthy, but there are days when the boy and the husband ask for the NOT so healthy food.
Danny: What’s it like when you visit your native country Colombia? Are you as recognized there as you are here in the U.S.?
Angela: Unfortunately I haven’t been there in many years, 15 maybe? I do have to visit soon, since I have my dear family there.
Danny: Lastly, where is Angela Mraz headed? What’s your crystal ball showing you?
Angela: There are many things I still want to accomplish. I want to continue providing my son with the best education possible, for this I need to make sure I continue to be successful at work and all other aspects of my life. There’s always room for improvement not only physically, but also intellectually. I believe that as long as I continue to work harder towards reaching small goals every day, I will become the successful person that I want to be in my big world!
Danny: Is there a next competition for you in the near future?
Angela: Competing for me is a personal challenge that requires hard work, discipline, dedication, long and intense hours of training. Quite honestly, I love everything about it! This year however, my main focus is to improve my life in aspects related to my career and family. I have no plans to compete this year, maybe in 2014? We’ll see — it is possible.
