On May 30 in Toronto, Ontario, the popular rap group Notes to Self announced the debut of their second full-length record, releasing on June 11, titled Target Market [Recoil]. To coincide with the release, they have released their new video for the single “Recoil [Crimson],” which displays the band’s raw grittiness that they are known and liked for. The video debuted on MTV.ca today. Watch the video HERE.
The group, critically praised and fan-adored, consists of rappers Swamp Donkey and Roshin, producer and rapper Bronze One and DJ Dopey, popular as a DJ on MTV Canada, and the winner of the 2003 DMC World DJ Championships, which is the highest award one can achieve in the DJ world. The group formulated in 2009, and has since grown their style into the popular sound it continues to be. This new release is the follow-up to their music video “Nobody” from their debut record, which received over 84,000 views on YouTube. They have recently released three music videos from the new album; “Used to Be,” (with Lee Gaul), “Mr. Polite Remix” (with Fashawn) and “Skylight [In Between]”. Target [Recoil] also features solid collaborations with acclaimed artists Evidence of Dilated Peoples and Fashawn, along with fellow Toronto artists, Lee Gaul, Arowbe and Beatface.
The critical acclaim for Target Market [Recoil] has been astounding with peaking at #5 on EARSHOT!’s national Hip Hop/Rap Charts and XXL Magazine stating that the group are “masters of versatile lyricism”. Their first album, A Shot in the Dark, was also a critical and fan success, and this album serves no less than the utmost favor of esteemed individuals and fans.
“Recoil [Crimson]” is co-directed by Notes’ Bronze One and Benjamin Young Hart.
The members of Notes to Self have a pretty impressive roster of heavyweights that they have worked and produced with. Producer, Bronze One, has produced songs for artists Brandy, Dido and Estelle. DJ Dopey is a well-known turntablist who has caught the eye and ear of many after opening for the likes of Talib Kweli and De La Soul. The quartet also has other creative and artistic projects in the works, such as a custom line of New Era NTS 59/FIFTY fitted caps and we’re sure the trail is to continue with wonderful opportunities.
